Jericho breaks his silence for return to Winnipeg
By DOUG LUNNEY - Winnipeg Sun

Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho has said little since his recent return to World Wrestling Entertainment, and the former Winnipegger continued to keep his cards close to his vest, or at least his illuminated jacket, when pressed for details on what will happen Friday night at Winnipeg's MTS Centre.

“There’s going to be some great matches, a cage match, a triple threat — I’m going to be there, what more do you need, man?

“I’m going to melt the snow with my lighted jacket,” Jericho said from Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Jericho is sure to get his usual frenzied hometown response when the WWE World Tour stops here, but he’ll be as excited as any of the fans after taking a break from the WWE for about a year and a half.

“Winnipeg is a great wrestling city, it always has been, that’s why it’s exciting for me to return — not just as a hometown guy, but also as a performer,” he said. “If I wasn’t from Winnipeg, it would still be one of the stops on tour that I’d be excited to go to because of the reaction we get.”

Jericho is equally pumped about his musical career as his rock band Fozzy, which has been together 12 years, inked its first major deal with Century Media Records on Wednesday. Touring with Fozzy, along with a stint on Dancing with the Stars, took up much of Jericho’s time during his period away from the ring.

Touring with a band can result in the same crazy road stories that come from wrestling, he said.

“Last tour we were in Brighton, England and I was in the dressing room talking to my wife after the show,” he began. “After a bit I noticed there was nobody around. I opened the door and it was pitch dark, all the lights were off and I realized everyone was gone and I was locked inside the club.

“There were steel doors that come down for fire protection and ... I had no reception to text my tour manager and tell him I was stuck inside. I was banging on the doors yelling ‘Help me! Help me!’ ”

A motion sensor alarm went off but Jericho thought it was a fire alarm.

“Then I panic, oh my God, there’s a fire, get me out of here!” he recalled. “Then the cops showed up and they came inside with their billy clubs drawn. All my guys were on the bus. They thought I’d gone to get something to eat ... So I almost got arrested for breaking into my own show.”

The time off not only allowed Jericho to get into what he figures is the best shape of his career, it gave him time to design his funky new jacket.

“I wanted to create something different for my return,” he said. “I found a guy who had this idea. It turns out he makes all of David Lee Roth’s stuff, (as well as) Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys, Brad Pitt ... and we kind of created this thing together.

“I think the jacket is more popular than I am at this point. I think in Winnipeg I’m just going to stick the jacket on a stand and sit in the back and turn it on and off.”

Despite living in Florida, Jericho remains a huge Winnipeg Jets fan and was thrilled to wear his Teemu Selanne jersey to a recent game in Tampa.

“It’s funny because I went to the game as a guest of the Lightning,” he said. “And they were like ‘You can’t wear a Jets jersey at a Lightning game.

“I said ‘the hell I can’t. If it was any other team I’d play along and wear whatever jersey you want, but it’s the Jets so I’m wearing this jersey and if you don’t want me to come in, I’ll just go to the box office and buy a ticket.’”

WWE tickets for Friday are available at the MTS Centre box office, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.ticketmaster.ca.
