Impact: Good guys left laying heading into PPV
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Impact Wrestling: You might not know it, but TNA has a pay-per-view extravaganza, Genesis, on Sunday. This is the last Impact before that show and what do you know, the participants of the three main matches are in the main event tonight as Bobby Roode teams with Kurt Angle and Bully Ray to face Jeff Hardy, James Storm and Abyss.
Tonight's taped show emanates from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Fla. "The Professor" Mike Tenay and The Tazz are our hosts.
Sting is out to start the show. He immediately asks Jeff Hardy to come to the ring. Why didn't they just walk out together? He says he's been impressed with Hardy because he's earned everybody's trust. He says the creatures were laying low for a while but now there's life. He says Hardy has his 100 percent endorsement.
This brings out the TNA World Heavyweight Champion Bobby Roode and he is flanked by Kurt Angle and Bully Ray. Roode says he just about threw up backstage listening to Sting. He says why not him? He's the face of the company, he's the champ. He asks if not him, why not Angle? If not him or Angle, why not Bully Ray? Roode says Sting plays favorites. He says Hardy is finally happy to have a friend in the business.
Now James Storm's music hits and out he comes with Abyss. Storm tells Roode to shut up. He gets in Angle's face and taunts him a little bit. He says Angle is scared now because it only takes one Last Call Superkick to knock his lights out.
Abyss takes the mic and tells Bully Ray that Immortal disrespected and took advantage of him and now they realize how much they need him. He says he doesn't need Immortal anymore. He says he's going to make him suffer for all the sins of Immortal.
Sting then books a six-man tag match for the main event. Ta ta for now.
Match #1 - TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship - (c) Gail Kim (Toronto, Ontario) & Madison Rayne (Seattle, Wash.) vs. Mickie James (Richmond, Va.) & Traci Brooks (St. Mary's, Ontario)
Mickie with a monkey flip on Madison. She hits a snap mare and tries to hit the ropes but Kim kicks her in the back. Traci comes over and kicks Kim, but in the ring, Madison takes over with a headlock. Mickie battles out, ducks a kick and pulls Madison into the splits. She hits a dropkick and goes for the cover but all hell breaks loose briefly. Mickie with a roll-up for two but she runs right into a clothesline from Madison.
Madison in control now. She hits a face-plant. Mickie tries to fire up but Kim tags herself in and shortly after, Traci gets the tag from Mickie. She hits some running shoves and a jawbreaker. Traci hits a clothesline for two but Madison breaks it up, only to turn around into a flying Thesz Press from Mickie. After all that's sorted out, Kim grabs Traci and hits Eat Defeat and that's it.
Winners via pinfall and STILL TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champions: Gail Kim & Madison Rayne
Match #2 - Gunner (Atlanta, Ga.) vs. Rob Van Dam (Battle Creek, Mich.)
Gunner all over RVD. He charges him in the corner but RVD gets a boot up. He goes to the top and hits a single-leg thrust kick. The momentum is short-lived as Gunner takes back over. He loads RVD up but RVD slips out and hits a spinning heel kick. Both men down now. RVD with some punches, clotheslines and kicks. He drills Gunner right in the face with a kick and hits a standing moonsault for two.
RVD hits Rolling Thunder but Gunner rolls out of the ring. RVD hits a baseball slide. RVD goes to jump out, but Gunner pulls him off the apron. The referee is counting and counts both men out.
This match is a double countout
Gunner exposes the concrete again and looks to deliver the piledriver but RVD back drops him. RVD puts Gunner on the guard rail and goes for the spinning leg drop but Gunner moves. Now Gunner stalks RVD and tries for the piledriver and RVD is saved at the last second by TNA's intrepid agents. God bless Al Snow.
Match #3 - Austin Aries (Minneapolis, Minn.) & Kid Kash (Nashville, Tenn.) vs. Jesse Sorensen (Katy, Texas) & Zema Ion (The Philippines)
Ion looking for a big tag from Sorensen, but he tags himself him as Sorensen looks to fire up. He hits a tornado DDT on Aries. Now Sorensen tags himself in and goes to work on both Aries and Kash. Aries eats a spinning neckbreaker. Sorensen slams Aries and starts going to the top when Ion tags himself back in. He goes for the 450 but eats some serious canvas. Sorensen tags himself in again, unbeknownst to Aries, and grabs him from behind and hits his finish.
Winners via pinfall: Jesse Sorensen & Zema Ion
Match #4 - Wild Card Tag Team Tournament Final - Samoa Joe (Isle of Samoa) & Magnus (The United Kingdom) vs. AJ Styles (Gainesville, Ga.) & Kazarian (Anaheim, Calif.)
Magnus whips Kazarian hard into the corner and then taunts the crowd. Magnus charges into the corner but eats turnbuckle. Kazarian brings in Styles, who comes in and hits the springboard flying forearm and then the Pele. Christopher Daniels comes out on the ramp and Styles goes to tag Kazarian, but he drops off the apron. In the distraction, Joe attacks Styles, hitting a kick. Then he hits a snap mare and Magnus comes off the top with a nice elbow and that's it.
Winners via pinfall and Wild Card Tag Team Tournament victors: Samoa Joe & Magnus
Match #5 - Jeff Hardy (Cameron, NC), James Storm (Leiper's Fork, Tenn.) & Abyss (Parts Unknown) vs. Bobby Roode (Toronto, Ontario), Kurt Angle (Pittsburgh, Pa.) & Bully Ray (New York City)
Ray and Angle work over Storm, as the heel team have him completely isolated from his teammates. That is until Storm uses a side Russian leg sweep and both men are down. Storm initially rolls the wrong way but is able to bring in Hardy to go against Roode, his opponent Sunday.
Hardy is rolling. He hits a modified Twist of Fate but Ray breaks up the pin and it breaks down as all six men are in the ring going at it. Referee Brian Hebner does something I've never actually seen in TNA before. He calls for the bell during a melee.
This match is a no contest
But that's not all, folks! The brawling continues. In the ring, Hardy hits the Twist of Fate on Roode and goes for the Swanton but Ray pushes Hardy off the top. Storm comes in and hits the Codebreaker on Roode and lines him up for the Last Call Superkick but Angle sneaks in and gives him a low blow and kicks Storm right in the head. Abyss comes in and cleans up on Roode and Angle. He loads Angle up for the Shock Treatment but Ray makes the save with his chain. He hangs Abyss with the chain as the heels decimate the faces. Hardy's in the crossface and Storm the ankle lock as we go off the air.
