ROH: Davey and Roddy in another classic
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
This week on Ring of Honor, it’s ROH World champion Davey Richards defending against Roderick Strong in the main event. Now while we’ve seen this match again and again, it never gets old seeing two of the world’s best.
We start off the show with Jim Cornette in the ring with the Briscoe Brothers. Dem boys rant about getting a title match with Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.
A profile on Tomasso Ciampa is next and we get comments from Ciampa, Prince Nana and Cornette. The push is on to make Ciampa an unstoppable force. It’s working.
Match #1 – Andy “Right Leg” Ridge vs. “The Dominant Male” Tomasso Ciampa w/ Prince Nana & Mr. Ernesto Osiris
Steve Corino joins Kevin Kelly on commentary for this match.
Not quite a squash, but this one was over before it started.
Ciampa drills Ridge with several running knees to the head in the corner and then ends this with a power bomb move where Ridge instead lands on Ciampa’s knees, called Project Ciampa. The three-count is a formality.
Winner via pinfall: Tomasso Ciampa
Nigel McGuinness is ringside with a fan. He asks this dude who will win tonight’s title match and said dude responds with a “Bring back Kevin Steen!” chant. Nigel cuts the mic and calls the guy a wanker.
A video package hyping Davey and Roddy’s match tonight is next. Basically, Strong comes off as arrogant and egotistical, while Davey talks his upbringing and winning the World title in New York City. I have to say that I like Strong as a heel.
Match #2 – ROH World Champion “American Wolf” Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong w/ Truth Martini
All I can say about this match is that if people want to see the definition of wrestling, check this one out.
Davey gets Strong in the ankle lock and Roddy taps, but Martini distracts referee Todd Sinclair. Davey dispatches Martini, but eats a Sick Kick from Strong, who gets a near-fall.
Strong fights out of another ankle lock and then the champ blasts him with a kick. Strong no-sells it, stands up, spits on Richards’ chest, but then takes two more reverse kicks from Davey. A third attempt at the ankle lock sees Strong tap and Richards retains his gold.
Winner via submission ... and STILL ROH World champion: Davey Richards
Richards looks directly into the camera and says "Welcome to ROH!" as the show comes to a close. What a great freaking match. Words don’t do it justice. If anyone wants to rank any WWE corporate clown above Davey Richards as the best wrestler in the world, they’re clinically insane.
Great show again tonight! ROH is wrestling. I mean, WRESTLING. They don't need the word "entertainment" in the name of the company to let you know what it's supposed to do for you. It just happens naturally.
'Til next week, folks.
Matt Mackinder was once called a wanker by a SLAM! Wrestling colleague for being an ROH fan. And yet, this same colleague has now admitted to being an ROH mark. Hmmm ... Email Matt at email@example.com.
