Impact: Solid in-ring action paces show
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Impact Wrestling: These shows are usually the best when they are heavier on wrestling and light on angles. That is the case tonight as we get some decent in-ring action, as AJ Styles takes on Devon, Alex Shelley faces Austin Aries and Scott Steiner and Gunner team to battle Rob Van Dam and Crimson.
Like usual, tonight's taped show emanates from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Fla. "The Professor" Mike Tenay and The Tazz are our hosts.
Immortal is in the ring and Bully Ray is leading the charge. He introduces everybody, giving them all glowing introductions other than Mr. Anderson. Anderson takes the mic and says Ray screwed him last week against Kurt Angle and he hopes that it was worth it for Bully Ray. He says he's a vindictive person and will get him back. Ray notes that when Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff aren't around, he's in charge. He says Anderson's a piece of dog crap on his shoes on his way to the world title.
Anderson notes neither of them are booked at Hardcore Justice, so let's do it. He starts singing obnoxiously when Ray spits in his face. This sets them off brawling briefly until they are broken up by their stable members. Then Fortune comes out. Now they come down and we have a pier-six brawl. Fortune clears the ring of Immortal.
Match #1 - Madison Rayne (Seattle, Wash.) vs. Miss Tessmacher (Houston, Texas)
Rayne in control early, but as she takes some time to yell at Mickie James at commentary, she turns around into a small package and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Miss Tessmacher
Rayne immediately attacks Tessmacher and James goes to make the save but she's attacked from behind by Angelina Love and then Winter, who lay her out with the title.
Match #2 - Bound For Glory Series - Devon (New York City ) vs. AJ Styles (Gainesville, Ga.)
Styles comes in with a sunset flip that he turns into a brief Styles Clash attempt but Devon kicks him in the head before it can get too close. They start brawling and Styles steps back and hits the Pele for two. Christopher Daniels comes to the ring. Styles is about to springboard in when he starts arguing with Daniels. He comes in too late and Devon steps under and rolls him up as he lands.
Winner via pinfall: Devon
Match #3 - Bound For Glory Series - Samoa Joe (Isle of Samoa) vs. The Pope (Harlem, NY)
The two are going back-and-forth when Devon comes to the ring. Pope goes for an Irish whip but Joe blocks it. Pope goes for a roll-up, but Joe drops his legs and locks in the Coquina Clutch and Pope taps.
After the bell rings, Joe refuses to release the choke and was given plenty of time by referee Jackson James, so James disqualifies him.
Winner via disqualification: The Pope
Match #4 - Anything Goes - Hernandez (Houston, Texas) vs. Bobby Roode (Wall Street)
James Storm is hurt having taken something in the back from Bully Ray during the show-opening brawl. But then they agree to let Bobby Roode take the match.
Roode gets going early on but then Hernandez takes over by posting him. He throws him back in the ring and hits a slingshot shoulder block. He takes his belt off and chokes Roode with it. Roode tries to fire up but Hernandez puts him down with a clothesline. Roode, though, does fire up with shots to the head from a trashcan lid. He follows with a long-range trash can shot and hits a superplex.
Now Roode lights Hernandez up with Kendo stick shots and a neckbreaker. Hernandez hits Roode with a shoulder block and goes for the Border Toss but Roode slips out, hits the Double R spinebuster and locks in the Fujiwara armbar. Rosita hops on the apron and distracts the ref as Hernandez taps. Storm comes over and removes Rosita from the apron, prompting an attack from Anarquia. Roode sees this and it briefly distracts him. Sarita then hits him with a Kendo stick which he mainly no sells and then chases her out of the ring. Hernandez comes up from behind and gets the win with the worst roll-up/feet on ropes spot in the history of professional wrestling.
Winner via pinfall: Hernandez
Match #5 - Austin Aries (Minneapolis, Minn.) vs. Alex Shelley (Detroit, Mich.)
Dragonscrew leg whip for Shelley and then he locks in a spinning Figure Four but Aries makes it to the ropes. Shelley sends Aries to the outside and hits a suicide dive that crushes Aries against the barricade. He throws him back in the ring and goes to the top and goes for a double stomp but Aries moves. He goes for Sliced Bread but Shelley escapes. Aries sends him to the outside and then puts on Shelley's jacket. Then he goes to hit Shelley with the spikes on it, but Earl Hebner stops it. Aries turns around into a boot from the gut and a Sliced Bread attempt but Aries puts him into the middle turnbuckle and then kicks it into his crotch. He follows with a brainbuster and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Austin Aries
Match #6 - Scott Steiner (Detroit, Mich.) & Gunner (Atlanta, Ga.) vs. Crimson (Brooklyn, NY) & Rob Van Dam (Battle Creek, Mich.)
Crimson gets the tag from RVD and goes to work on Gunner. T-Bone suplex for two. Crimson hits the ropes but Steiner knees him in the back. He no sells this but walks right into a clothesline from Gunner. Back suplex by Gunner for two. Gunner goes for a double sledge but Crimson catches him and drills him into the mat. Both men make tags.
RVD kicks Steiner right in the face and a spin kick, but he runs right into a belly-to-belly suplex from Steiner. RVD, though, hits a kick and then Rolling Thunder but Gunner breaks up the pin. RVD and Steiner go to the outside while Gunner and Crimson battle in the ring. RVD puts Steiner on the rail and goes for the leg drop but Gunner breaks it up. As he turns around, Crimson spears him and RVD comes over and hits the Five-Star on the illegal man. Then he gets up and Steiner hits him with an STO. Steiner with a clothesline on Crimson and he goes for a cover on RVD but he gets a shoulder up.
Steiner loads RVD up on the top and is going for something but Crimson comes in underneath him and gives him an electric chair. RVD follows with the Five Star and that's it.
Winners via pinfall: Rob Van Dam & Crimson
It's time for the Hardcore Justice main event contract signing. Jeremy Borash welcomes out Kurt Angle and then Sting. They sign and are given time to talk. Angle says he's coming for Sting at Hardcore Justice and it'll end in a hand shake, but he's walking away with the title.
Sting puts Angle over and then talks about wanting to bring the company back to Dixie Carter, which is something he wants to do. That's why he's not going to lose at Hardcore Justice.
