Impact: Gunner shocks everybody
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Impact Wrestling: It's the final show before Slammiversary and in tonight's main event, Sting teams with Eric Young to take on Mr. Anderson and Gunner. You won't believe the outcome of this one. Elsewhere, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff celebrate their victory over Mick Foley.
Like usual, tonight's taped show emanates from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Fla. "The Professor" Mike Tenay and The Tazz are our hosts.
Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are out. Hogan says the Network realizes they no longer need a stooge looking over their shoulders, so from this point forward, "it's smooth sailing, brother," and the Network has 100 percent confidence in them. Bischoff says the Network still wants the X Division so he and Hogan are going to present it in a fair and balanced matter.
Bischoff then calls out Sting and Mr. Anderson, the two competitors in this weekend's World Heavyweight Championship match. Hogan says he gave the Network his word that he'd run the company in the most professional way possible, so he promised the Network there'd be a winner and a loser in their match.
Anderson grabs the mic and says everything Sting stands for is a joke. He says he's going to have his hand raised Sunday. Sting says he won't and can't lose. He says the title is the only thing standing between Hogan and Bischoff making a complete mockery of the company. He says the title gives him the stroke to make a difference in the company. He says one of two things have to happen before he leaves TNA: He makes Hogan and Bischoff's lives miserable until they disappear, or the real Hulk Hogan stands up again. He tells Hogan to get rid of Bischoff.
Match #1 - Winter (England) & Angelina Love (Toronto, Ontario) vs. Tara (State of California) & Mickie James (Richmond, Va.)
It's Mickie and Tara who use quick tags early to isolate Winter, but she hits a jawbreaker on Tara and brings in Angelina. Angelina just points at Mickie but Tara doesn't tag her in. Side slam for Tara and she brings in Mickie for a double team splash. Winter in and she and Mickie go back-and-forth. A double team allows Angelina and Winter to take over and isolate Mickie.
Mickie, though, fires up with a neckbreaker on Winter. She crawls over to tag Tara, but Madison Rayne comes out, pulls Tara off the apron and throws her into the steps. Angelina grabs Mickie and hits her drop down backcracker and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Angelina Love & Winter
After the match, Angelina chokes out Mickie.
Match #2 - Hernandez (Houston, Texas) & Anarquia vs. James Storm (Leiper's Fork, Tenn.) & Alex Shelley (Detroit, Mich.)
Storm and Shelley are rolling early, looking like they've been a tag team for years. Codebreaker for Storm. Storm drops Anarquia and Shelley goes to the top but he's crotched by Hernandez and Mexican America takes over. Shelley finally brings in Storm against Anarquia. Big backdrop connects. He goes for a cover but Hernandez makes the save. Shelley kicks him and Storm clotheslines him out of the ring. Shelley takes out Hernandez with a suicide dive and Storm hits the backcracker on Anarquia and goes for the cover, but Sarita and Rosita jump on the apron to distract the referee.
Storm takes a chug of his beer and spits it in their face. Shelley comes up from behind Anarquia and goes for a super kick, but he ducks and Shelley drills Storm. Anarquia throws a stunned Shelley out of the ring and pins Storm.
Winners via pinfall: Mexican America
Jeff Jarrett is out. Kurt Angle quickly follows. Jarrett says tonight won't be them going back-and-forth, Angle's going to listen to everything he has to say. Jarrett says Karen Jarrett won't be at Slammiversary. Jarrett recalls on how he brought Angle into TNA and that Angle is the best in-ring performer in the world. It's why he stepped aside to allow Angle to be the centerpiece of the promotion. He says Angle never even said thanks. Jarrett says over the past six months, not only has he defeated Angle every time, he has embarrassed him. He says it's come down to Angle's gold medal and he won't sleep until he owns it.
Angle grabs the mic and thanks Jarrett for taking Karen out of his life for good. All he wants is he and Jarrett in the ring one-on-one. He says at Slammiversary, he's going to let his wrestling do the talking.
Bully Ray is out with an open challenge. He issues it to anybody except that piece of crap Devon.
Match #3 - Bully Ray (New York City) vs. Rob Van Dam (Battle Creek, Mich.)
RVD goes for a monkey flip but Ray just shrugs him off and then charges and hits a corner clothesline. Then we see AJ Styles in the crowd watching. Ray stalking RVD when he catches Styles out of the corner of his eye. Ray starts yelling at him. He goes back to RVD and is looking for a power bomb but gets back dropped. Thrust kick for RVD. He goes to the top and hits the Five Star Frog Splash and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Rob Van Dam
We're supposed to have a match, apparently, but Velvet Sky attacks ODB on her way to the ring. ODB takes over and throws her into the steps and then into the ring.Match #4 - ODB (Minneapolis, Minn.) vs. Velvet Sky
ODB is all over Velvet. She charges Velvet in the corner but Velvet storms out with a clothesline. She beats her down in the corner. ODB is reeling now. Velvet comes jumping off the steps but ODB catches her (well, that was the idea, anyway) and runs her into the ring post. Velvet basically no sells this back in the ring. Fallaway slam connects. ODB bad mouths her, holding her by the throat when out of nowhere, Velvet DDT's her and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: Velvet Sky
Match #5 - Gunner (Atlanta, Ga.) & Mr. Anderson (Green Bay, Wisc.) vs. Sting (Venice Beach, Calif.) & Eric Young (Nashville, Tenn.)
Multiple Stinger Splashes connect on Gunner, but an Anderson cheap shot changes things. Anderson and Gunner controlling Sting until he charges out of the corner with a clothesline. Anderson and Sting both down and both men make tags.
Young on fire. He goes to the top and lands a big top-rope elbow on Gunner. Young is celebrating when Gunner shoves Young into Sting. They collide heads. The referee deems this a tag. Gunner scoops up Sting from the apron and hits him with the F5 and that's it. Gunner pins the world champion.
Winners via pinfall: Gunner & Mr. Anderson
