WWE NXT: Rookies bomb on the mic
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on WWE NXT: "Redemption" is heating up and tonight, the six rookies get a chance to show off their mic skills by trying to make fun of each other. The key word here is try as an all-time bad NXT segment ensued. In our main event, Byron Saxton battles Lucky Cannon. Should be a good one!

And we are "LIVE!" from Columbus, Ohio. Todd Grisham and William Regal are our commentators and Matt Striker and Maryse are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).

Maryse welcomes out our six NXT rookies. Striker reminds us there is no immunity but they are competing for Redemption Points. How this differs from Immunity Points beats me.

It's time for our next Redemption Challenge. It's a Pass the Mic Challenge. The rookies have to bash each other in 20 seconds with the crowd deciding the winner. First up is Jacob Novak vs. Byron Saxton. Novak gets about three words out before the crowd just boos him out of the building. Saxton roasted Novak and says he is now the official spokesman for Huggies diapers due to his white trunks. Saxton runs away with this one.

Next up is Conor O'Brian and Titus O'Neil. O'Brian calls him dumb. Crowd, and I, collectively boo. O'Neil makes fun of O'Brian's nose saying all his pullover shirts have stretch marks. Crowd again boos. O'Neil wins.

Finally we have Darren Young against Lucky Cannon. Young says it's 2011 and the 1980s wants their robe back. Cannon goes for the cheap heat and insults the local sports teams and then stares at Maryse. Crowd obviously likes Young here.

So we're down to three and they each have 30 seconds to diss the other two. Saxton completely bombs. O'Neil totally bombs, too. Won't be hard for Young to top these two. Young is a bit better but Regal tears all of them apart for not wanting to intimidate their opponents and instead make silly jokes. Your winner is Darren Young.

Match #1 - Titus O'Neil vs. Darren Young

O'Neil cranks Young with a huge clothesline early on. Just killed the poor guy. Young, though, goes to work with a headlock. O'Neil stands and runs Young into the corner twice and breaks the hold. Backbreaker for O'Neil for two. O'Neil whips Young into the corner where Young's pro, Chavo Guerrero, is. Then Hornswaggle comes over and starts biting Guerrero's ankle and it's like I've been transported back to 2009 and that awful, awful feud. O'Neil sends Young into Guerrero, knocking him off the apron and hits him with the Sky High and that's it.

Winner via pinfall: Titus O'Neil

Yoshi Tatsu runs into Lucky Cannon backstage and tells him Maryse is his friend and he should be more respectful of her. Then Maryse comes up and tries to play nice with Cannon but he ends up getting himself slapped. Tatsu starts snickering and says "not so Lucky." Maryse thinks he's laughing at her (I have no idea why) and slaps him. Cannon thinks that's funny and Tatsu slaps him.

Match #2 - Vladimir Kozlov & Conor O'Brien vs. JTG & Jacob Novak

Striker comes out and says they are going to change it up a little bit. He says instead we're having a dance off instead. It's like a house show came to NXT. Whoever decided to turn this from a match to a dance-off is now my best friend in the world.

JTG and Novak are first. Novak dances a bit and then starts to protest. They were bad. Kozlov and O'Brian are actually pretty good. I chuckled.

Winners via better dancing: Vladimir Kozlov & Conor O'Brian

Match #2 - Byron Saxton vs. Lucky Cannon

Cannon takes a cheap shot at Saxton in the corner and then beats him down. The ref pulls him off and Saxton is not happy and goes after him. Tyson Kidd lends a distraction and allows Cannon to boot Saxton right in the kisser.

Cannon with a chinlock now. He goes for a neckbreaker but Saxton pushes him off and hits a flying forearm. He goes to the second rope and comes down with a clothesline. Cannon comes back and drives Saxton into the ring post, loads Saxton up on his shoulders and hits his finish.

Winner via pinfall: Lucky Cannon

Tatsu comes in to check on Saxton and Cannon sneak attacks him and hits his finish on Tatsu.
