WWE NXT: Redemption begins for 6 former rookies
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on WWE NXT: They'rrrrrrre baaaaaaaack. Just when you thought WWE couldn't possibly continue NXT after a fourth season, they surprise everyone with a fifth season. And what a dandy this should be. Instead of FCW rookies, Season 5 will feature rookies who couldn't make the cut on other seasons of the show with quite the cast of WWE pros. Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from Houston, Texas. Todd Grisham and William Regal are our commentators and Matt Striker and Maryse are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
This season's theme is "Redemption." Here are your rookies: Darren Young, Conor O'Brian, Lucky Cannon, Byron Saxton, Jacob Novak and Titus O'Neil.
Maryse says the rookies are working together to earn a spot on NXT Season 6. In this season, there will be no immunity points, instead there will be redemption points.
Now it's time to introduce the pros: Young will be mentored by Chavo Guerrero. Guerrero says Young can't take it easy like he did last time on NXT. He challenges him to get noticed. O'Brien's pro will be Vladimir Kozlov. Cannon's pro is Tyson Kidd. Saxton draws Yoshi Tatsu. Finally, O'Neil gets, and I kid you not, Hornswaggle.
Match #1 - Darren Young vs. Jacob Novak
The two start brawling early. Some good intensity early. Young with some clotheslines and then he hits his full nelson throw and gets the duke.
Winner via pinfall: Darren Young
Tatsu catches up with Maryse backstage and says he has something to tell her when Saxton comes running in, saying he wants to sit down with him and come up with a game plan to win NXT. Maryse has to jet and then Tatsu yells at Saxton that his timing is no good. Yoshi rules.
It's time for the Army Boot Camp Obstacle Course and it's worth three redemption points.
O'Neil is up first and he does very well, finishing at 29.8 seconds. Well, Novak comes in and finishes at 24 seconds flat. Saxton can't make it and finishes at 26.5 seconds. Cannon is up next and instead of going, he grabs the mic from Maryse and says if the people thinks he's going to be their circus monkey tonight, then they're stupider than he thought. Now he's going full heel, being quite possibly even more annoying than he was during Season 2. He says he's going to steal Maryse from Ted DiBiase and that won't be much of a challenge. Maryse gives him the hand to the face.
O'Brian is next and he stumbles early after the wall and finishes at 27.1 seconds. Young wraps it up and finishes at 23 seconds flat to win it. Great effort and the crowd actually got behind him. He is your winner and earns three redemption points.
Match #2 - Titus O'Neil vs. Lucky Cannon
Cannon sends O'Neil to the outside in the early going. He brings him back in and works a chinlock with the knee in the back. He chokes O'Neil with the ring rope but then O'Neil gets going he a big jumping shoulder block. He charges him in the corner but Cannon gets his boot up. Then Hornswaggle comes over and distracts Tyson Kidd. Kidd chases him around and into the ring. The ref escorts Kidd back to his corner. This allows Hornswaggle to push Cannon off the top rope right into a Sky High (sit-out spinebuster) and that'll do it.
Winner via pinfall: Titus O'Neil
Kidd tries to attack Hornswaggle with the Sharpshooter after the match but O'Neil boots him out of the ring. Then O'Neil and Hornswaggle do the dog bark.
