Mike Mizanin loves to be hated.

Because he's The Miz ... and he's "awesome."

A reality TV star before his wrestling days, he has said that he was ostracized by other wrestlers.

"The fact is everybody has always hated me. I'm the best. And everyone wants to be the best. The Miz is Numero Uno," he says.

"I liked having heat. I enjoyed the fact that nobody liked me. I kind of embraced it. I could see what was behind their smiles."

The dislike goes beyond the WWE roster.

"The fans boo me. They say I'm the worst thing that's ever happened to WWE," he says. "The fans yell that I suck and when they say The Miz is awful, when I say awesome."

He doesn't see himself becoming a poster boy for WWE anytime soon, either.

"The greatest way to become a good guy or heel has to come organically," he says. "You can't shove it down the fans' throats. I'm not going to chan gewhat I do or what I say.

"Randy Orton was the ultimate bad guy and then people saw how great he was in the ring so they flipped the switch and started to cheer him.

"Look at Rocky Maivia, before he was The Rock. He was the ultimate cheesy babyface and the fans couldn't stand him. I don't think people will ever like me."

Unlike many WWE stars who float in and out of character during interviews, The Miz has an air of extreme self-confidence, an aura of defiance, about him, will still somehow remaining likeable. And as the WWE heavyweight champ, he's earned that right.

"I've always had a lot of confidence," he says. "One of the qualities that makes The Miz The Miz is that he thinks he's better than everybody else.

"I wasn't always the best athlete, but in my mind, I believed I was."

And now, Sunday, he'll be starting across the ring at Orton, one on of the biggest nights on the WWE calendar.

"It's a pretty incredible path I've taken. Basically, anybody who wins the Royal Rumble is going to be facing me.

"The Rumble is my favourite pay-per-view besides Wrestlemania. You never know what surprises are going to take place. To go up against Randy Orton, who I have defeated twice, it will be great. I don't plan on losing the championship."

Confident to the last breath.
