WWE NXT: Rookies battle for chance at new pro
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on WWE NXT: We're down to the final four and it's a big night for the rookies. First, they get the chance to "Outthink the Fink" in the night's only challenge. Then, all four will meet in a fatal four-way elimination match with big stakes. The winning rookie has the chance to switch their pro should they choose to do so. Also on the show, Daniel Bryan meets Ted DiBiase in a very good match. Should be a good one!

And we are "LIVE!" from Cincinnati, Ohio. Todd Grisham and Josh Mathews are our commentators and Matt Striker is our host. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).

Striker already is in the ring with the four remaining rookies, Brodus Clay, Byron Saxton, Derrick Bateman and Johnny Curtis. Striker says tonight, the rookies will engage in a Fatal Four-Way match and the winning rookie can swap their pro if they so choose.

Striker says last week, there was a rules violation committed by Derrick Bateman. He throws it to a backstage video of Bateman colluding with Daniel Bryan to win last week's challenge. They come back from the video and the other rookies are not happy. Striker says Bateman will be penalized in this next challenge. Bryan says that wasn't Bateman since he doesn't wear face paint. It must've been The Ultimate Warrior, he guesses.

So our first challenge is going to be "Outthink The Fink" featuring legendary WWE ring announcer Howard Finkel. Striker says the rookies have 30 seconds to answer, but Bateman, as his penalty, only has 20. The winner gains two immunity points.

Striker brings out Finkel and says if any rookie can outscore Finkel, they get an additional two points.

Finkel gets two correct answers as Striker is slow asking the questions. Mathews reads him the riot act. Grisham thinks he can't read. Curtis gets one. Bateman gets one, actually knowing that Edge won his first WWE singles title from Jeff Jarrett. Saxton gets one. Clay gets one, barely getting his lone answer in under the wire. It is declared that since no one beat the Fink and they all tied, no one is getting any points.

They cut back to commentary and Grisham just declares, "they're all losers ladies and gentlemen." Mathews calls it a "trainwreck."

Match #1 - Ted DiBiase vs. Daniel Bryan

Bryan in control early. The match is so captivating that Mathews has a conversation with Maryse. Mathews gets her autograph and she kisses it, leaving a lip mark. Bryan working the left arm. DiBiase favoring it but he still goes for a Greco Roman Knuckle Lock and DiBiase kicks Bryan in the gut and then shoves him to the mat, holding the lock. This is old school. Bryan gets the better of it again and DiBiase takes a walk.

Bryan charges DiBiase in the corner but DiBiase moves and Bryan crashes and burns. DiBiase goes to work. He throws Bryan to the outside and Clay is lurking as DiBiase takes the ref. Bateman comes over and nothing happens. DiBiase with an axehandle from the apron. DiBiase smashes his head into the ring and then into the announce table. Bryan is reeling.

He gets back in the ring and suddenly gets going with some European uppercuts but DiBiase cuts him off. He goes to work with a headlock. Bryan firs up out of it and hits a big clothesline. DiBiase heads right into a kick and then Bryan comes off the top with the missile dropkick but DiBiase kicks out at two. They trade some near falls and both men are down. DiBiase with a running kick to the gut. He puts the boots to Bryan in the corner but Bryan gets up. DiBiase tries to hit a spinebuster but Bryan grabs a guillotine choke and tries to transition it into the LaBelle Lock but DiBiase gets under the ropes.

Bryan then traps DiBiase in the ropes and kicks him. He goes for the suicide dive but DiBiase catches him with a big elbow. He corrals him in the ring and hits Dream Street and that's it.

Winner via pinfall: Ted DiBiase

DiBiase, Clay and Maryse are backstage. Maryse patronizes him for actually winning a match. DiBiase gives Clay a pep talk saying he knows all the other rookies will want him as their pro after the main event. DiBiase says he wants Clay to win the match because he feels he and Clay can win the WWE Tag Team Titles.

Match #2 - Johnny Curtis vs. Byron Saxton vs. Brodus Clay vs. Derrick Bateman

Apparently this is an elimination match. They all gang up on Clay early but that hatred quickly switches to Bateman. Curtis and Saxton feed Bateman right to Clay and he hits a big exploder suplex, an elbow drop and that's it for Bateman.

Derrick Bateman eliminated

Now Saxton and Curtis team up on Clay and hit a double-team suplex. Clay goes to the outside and Curtis tries to roll Saxton up to no avail. Saxton throws Curtis over the top and onto Clay.

We're back and Clay is running wild on Saxton. But Curtis comes onto the apron and hits a Stunner over the ropes on Clay. Curtis goes to the top but Saxton crotches him. Saxton goes up but Curtis headbutts him off. Curtis stands and hits both men with a top rope legdrop. He pins Saxton. One of the more impressive moves in the history of the show.

Byron Saxton eliminated

We're down to Curtis and Clay. Clay gets Curtis down in the corner and runs his rear end right into him. Curtis is feeling that. Clay drags him out and applies a nerve hold. Curtis back to a vertical base but Clay knees him in the gut. Clay just beating him down in the corner. Curtis, though, gets up and shoulders Clay in the corner. Curtis comes off the top but Clay catches him with the Tongan Death Grip and takes him down and pins him.

Winner via pinfall: Brodus Clay

So DiBiase and Maryse come down to the ring and here's Striker. He asks Clay if he wants to switch pros. He says his pro has a lot of things but his pro is not Ted DiBiase. He says he can't control his girl and he's the brokest rich dude he's ever met. He declares his new pro to be Alberto Del Rio. He then tells DiBiase he's had something he wanted to tell him and he hits him with the Tongan Death Grip and puts him down. Chea.
