ROH: Homicide battles Castagnoli, Edwards defends TV gold
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on Ring Of Honor on HDNet, we get a four-match show, including a World TV title match, and Homicide and Claudio Castagnoli in the main event.

Tonight’s show, as well as the next few, will emanate from Louisville, Ky.

Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak are ringside and our TV title match is up first.

Match #1 – Eddie Edwards vs. Mark Briscoe – ROH World TV Title Match

Wait, isn’t Christopher Daniels the TV champ??? Maybe this match was taped upwards of a month ago? Hmmm…

This match has nice moves and counters and I like the finesse style of Eddie meshing with the aggressive style of Briscoe.

Edwards locks in the Achilles Lock, but Briscoe gets to the ropes. Edwards sets Briscoe up top and goes for a superplex, but Briscoe knocks the champ down and hits an elbow drop for a two-count. Briscoe hits a flying knee in the corner and goes for the Cutthroat Driver, but Eddie rolls through and gets Briscoe in the Achilles Lock and Mark taps.

Winner via submission … and STILL World TV champion: Eddie Edwards

Castagnoli is backstage with Chris Hero and Sara Del Rey for an interview with Kyle Durden. Apparently, Claudio hasn’t had his cup of java yet, so he sends Durden out for a cup. Hahaha. Claudio then badmouths Homicide and ridicules his name.

ROH newcomer Mike Mondo cuts a promo on being “The Giant Killer” and hyping his arrival. His match is next.

Match #2 – Grizzly Redwood vs. Mike Mondo

Giant Killer, eh? I would have hoped Mondo and Rasche Brown, but Grizzly? Oh well, I’ll take it. I see the irony here.

Redwood springboards off the middle rope into a swinging DDT for a near-fall. Redwood then goes to the top turnbuckle, but Mondo falls into the ropes to knock him down. Mondo goes up and hits a superplex for the pin, a la “Cowboy” Bob Orton. Yes! An old school move wins a match. Woo-hoo!

Winner via pinfall: Mike Mondo

Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin get a video and interview montage, segueing into their match and one I’m actually excited for.

Match #3 – Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin vs. The Bravado Brothers (Lance & Harlem)

I was hoping Haas and Benjamin would wear their Team Angle attire, but no such luck.

Shelton catches both Bravados in a double Samoan drop. Haas comes in and the pair hit an inverted atomic drop and superkick combo and then their leapfrog hotshot axehandle (think Beverly Brothers of 1991, people). Haas locks in the Haas of Pain on Lance for the tap.

Winners via submission: Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin

Backstage, “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett, alongside Brutal Bob, tells Durden that when he debuts next week, he won’t live up to the hype that surrounds him. In fact, he’ll surpass it. We shall see.

Match #4 – Homicide vs. Claudio Castagnoli w/ Chris Hero & Sara Del Rey

Not sure this match will surpass Edwards and Briscoe top open tonight’s show, but I’m still pumped.

Homicide scores with a swinging DDT (our second of the show) for a two-count. Homicide removes his elbow pad and goes for the lariat, but Claudio counters with one of his own for another two. Claudio gets a two-count after a chokeslam and then picks up Homicide to go for Snake Eyes on an exposed turnbuckle. Homicide escapes and charges at Claudio, but Claudio dodges. Homicide stops short and dodges a charge of his own with Claudio (of course) crashing into the buckle. Homicide with the Ace Crusher and that’s enough for three.

Winner via pinfall: Homicide

WEEKLY DISCLAIMER: I say this each week and I’ll say it yet again tonight. ROH was an excellent show this week and continues to show why it is not just another wrestling show on Monday night, but the only wrestling show on Monday night.

'Til next week, folks, when Bennett makes his debut and ROH World champion Roderick Strong takes on Colt Cabana.
