ROH: Recapping the big moments of 2010
MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Ring Of Honor on HDNet, it's the Best of 2010 show and I wonder how all the great matches, moments and feuds from the past year will get crammed into one hour.
Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak host the recap show and first up, it's the finals of the ROH World TV title tournament between American Wolves partners Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards from the April 26 episode.
This was a great match and one that saw counter-hold after counter-hold and Edwards eventually win the title with an Achilles Lock submission over his partner.
The All Night Express taking out Delirious with two spike piledrivers after Delirious beat Austin Aries in a cage match on Sept. 20 is recapped next.
On the Feb. 22, 2010 show, the Briscoe Brothers defended the ROH World tag titles against the Young Bucks in the Bucks' last ROH match before bolting for TNA where they are now known as Generation Me. The Briscoes retained here by hitting the Doomsday Device on Matt Jackson and then embracing after the match.
In what was probably the second-best feud of 2010 (for the best, keep reading), the Briscoes and the Kings of Wrestling battled for the tag belts all year, but the Kings ruled from April's Big Bang pay-per-view forward after winning the titles from Jay and Mark that night.
The Briscoes' last chance at the titles came on the Oct. 25 episode and saw Shane Hagadorn interfere to allow Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli retain. After the match, Mike Briscoe, Jay and Mark's father, ran in and pummelled Hagadorn, setting up the six-man tag match at Final Battle on Dec. 18.
Now for the best feud: El Generico vs. Kevin Steen. It all started at Final Battle 2009 when Steen turned on Generico and the war lasted all of 2010 until Final Battle 2010 when Generico won a mask vs. ROH career match against Steen.
Generico and Colt Cabana, who didn't have as big a role in ROH as he has in past years, faced Steen and Steve Corino in a street fight back on July 19 and this was as chaotic a match as you will ever see. Corino got the pin on Cabana after a suplex off a wobbly table perched on the top rope through a table in the ring. Just a great match and the fact it was at The Arena in South Philadelphia made it reminiscent of the original ECW.
Jim Cornette's sit-down interview with Davey is next and it's the one where Davey addresses the rumors that he is retiring at the end of the year. Richards sets the record straight by saying who he is in the ring is who he is in real life and he is staying in ROH.
Christopher Daniels returning to ROH gets some play and his interview comparing himself to Randy Couture and Cal Ripken, Jr. is shown.
Tyler Black and Roderick Strong each winning the ROH World title gets recapped and then Black's last ROH match against Richards from the Oct. 18 show is played. Another thing of beauty and one that Davey wins by getting Black to tap from the Texas Cloverleaf.
Final Battle 2010 gets a quick recap and then back in the studio, Hogewood and Prazak wish us all a Happy New Year and Prazak brings out a gold boat and says ROH is sailing ahead. Hogewood says to slap the porpoise and we are out until next Monday.
WEEKLY DISCLAIMER: I say this each week and Iíll say it yet again tonight. ROH was an excellent show this week and continues to show why it is not just another wrestling show on Monday night, but the only wrestling show on Monday night.
