ROH: The Holiday Gauntlet rules the show
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Ring Of Honor on HDNet, it’s an eight-man Holiday Gauntlet Match with the winner receiving $10,000. I hope this match takes up the whole hour, because I’m rarin’ to go!
Jim Cornette opens the show backstage explaining the rules. The top 16 stars in ROH had their names put into a hat and eight were chosen at random. Two men start and each time a wrestler is eliminated, a new wrestler enters the match. The last one standing is the winner.
Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak talk about Final Battle from Saturday night in New York City, but don’t give out any results, instead telling us to check the ROH website for more info. Nice plug, fellas! If you want quicker results, check out the News & Rumours section here on SLAM! Wrestling!
To the ring we go and let the gauntlet begin.
Match #1 – Holiday Gauntlet - Jay Briscoe vs. Steve Corino
Jay comes out of a corner with an elbow and then a blockbuster for a two-count. Jay tries for a Death Valley Driver, but Corino counters for two. Corino goes for a clothesline, but Jay blocks it and rolls up Corino for the pin.
Steve Corino has been eliminated.
Corino leaves the ring, but not before nailing Jay with a cheap shot.
Match #2 – Holiday Gauntlet – Jay Briscoe vs. Christopher Daniels
Apparently, Daniels is the new World TV champion, but he doesn’t have the belt here. Not official until it’s on TV, eh?
Jay hits Daniels with a superkick and both men are down. Daniels gets up first, misses a charge, and Jay puts Daniels down with a clothesline and a dropkick. Daniels ducks a second clothesline, but runs into the Death Valley Driver. Briscoe with the downward spiral into the second buckle for a two-count. Daniels counters the Jay Driller with a roll-through and then a knee to the midsection. The Angels Wings is next and Daniels gets the duke.
Jay Briscoe has been eliminated.
Match #3 – Holiday Gauntlet – Christopher Daniels vs. Rhett Titus
Titus runs right in, but eats a Daniels dropkick. Prazak discusses what Titus would do with $10K and let me just say it involves women. Lots of them.
Titus gets a boot up off a charge from Daniels, but leaps off the second buckle into a uranage slam (Book End, Rock Bottom for those wondering). Daniels up top for the Best Moonsault Ever and he gets the pin.
Rhett Titus has been eliminated.
Davey Richards has drawn No. 5, but we go to a commercial break.
Match #4 – Holiday Gauntlet – Christopher Daniels vs. Davey Richards
Daniels scores with the uranage slam, misses the BME, but saw Richards moving and lands on his feet. Daniels with a palm strike and counters the alarm clock into an O’Connor Roll. Richards grabs a waistlock and then a German suplex for two. Daniels gets up, but is dropped with a buzzsaw kick for the pin.
Christopher Daniels has been eliminated.
Match #5 – Holiday Gauntlet – Davey Richards vs. Claudio Castagnoli
Davey goes for the handspring enziguiri, but gets caught in the UFO for a near-fall. Claudio is steamed and when he goes for the Ricola Bomb, Davey counters it into a nice sunset flip for three.
Claudio Castagnoli has been eliminated.
Match #6 – Holiday Gauntlet – Davey Richards vs. Chris Hero w/ Shane Hagadorn
As he leaves the ring, Claudio grabs Davey’s leg, but Hero only gets a two-count.
Hero misses a moonsault and Richards puts on the ankle lock. Hero reaches the ropes and Hagadorn gets on the apron. Hero hits a running elbow however and a Liger Bomb for two. Hero gets the loaded elbow pad ready as Hagadorn distracts referee Todd Sinclair, but Richards counters into a small package and gets three.
Chris Hero has been eliminated.
Davey pulls Hagadorn into the ring, but that only allows Hero’s loaded elbow to connect. Davey is down and out and ROH World champion Roderick Strong is the eighth ands final entry.
Match #7 – Holiday Gauntlet – Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong
Roddy goes for the quick cover, but Richards is out at two. We’re getting near the end of TV time, so this match looks to end in a matter of minutes.
Strong charges into the alarm clock, counters, but eats an enziguiri. Richards misses his corner charge and Strong scores with a kick to the face and the gutbuster for two. Strong goes for the Strong Hold, but Davey counters into the ankle lock. Strong gets out of it and throws Richards into the corner, nails the running forearm and then his signature Sick Kick for the win and $10,000.
Winner of the Holiday Gauntlet: Roderick Strong
After a commercial break, Davey is still in the ring taking in the “Best in the World” chants from the crowd. Prazak and Hogewood are in the studio and Prazak praises Roddy for the win.
WEEKLY DISCLAIMER: I say this each week and I’ll say it yet again tonight. ROH was an excellent show this week and continues to show why it is not just another wrestling show on Monday night, but the only wrestling show on Monday night.
'Til next week, folks, when ROH will be a “Best Of 2010” show. Suh-weet!.
