WWE NXT: Decent matches, embarrassing challenges
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on WWE NXT: If you thought NXT Season 3 set new lows, well, guess again. In some of the most wretched segments in WWE history, our six rookies take part in an absolutely horrible karaoke challenge. On the bright side, though, the wrestling on this season isn't offensive in the least. So you take the good with the bad here in Season 4. Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from Lafayette, La. Todd Grisham and Josh Mathews are our commentators and Matt Striker is our host. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Striker welcomes the six rookies into the ring. He says tonight, for the first time ever tonight, we will have a karaoke challenge. They will have to sing a superstar's entrance theme.
Conor O'Brian gets Sheamus' theme and, wow. This was bad. Derrick Bateman gets The Miz. Awful again. Jacob Novak gets Dolph Ziggler. Slightly better but still awful. Brodus Clay gets "Dashing" Cody Rhodes. Oh my. This was actually great. Johnny Curtis gets Randy Orton's theme. He manages to get some of the words wrong despite them being on the TitanTron. Awful. Byron Saxton gets Shawn Michaels' theme. He too manages to get the words wrong despite them being on the screen, not to mention singing them off tune. This was way worse than anything on Season 3.
Somehow, Saxton wins. This was awful, awful, awful. These guys made Jillian Hall look like Taylor Swift.
Match #1 - Chris Masters & Byron Saxton vs. Ted DiBiase & Brodus Clay
Masters actually tries a sunset flip on Clay and that fails miserably. Clay crushing him but he runs into the buckle and Masters tries to catch him with the Masterlock but Clay is too big. Huge suplex connects for Clay and then he drops in an elbow. Clay is rolling.
We're back and DiBiase is in against Masters. Now Clay. They have Masters isolated in their corner. Masters tries to get going but DiBiase drills him with a nice dropkick. Masters, though, hits a slam and brings in Saxton. He immediately gets hit with a drop-toe hold by DiBiase and he brings in Clay. Clay catches Saxton coming off the second rope and buries him. DiBiase wants the tag and gets it. DiBiase is slow and misses the knee drop and Saxton gets to Masters. Shoulder block by Masters and a big spinebuster. He goes for the cover and Clay tries to break it up with an elbow but Masters moves and Clay hits DiBiase. Masters calls for the Masterlock but Saxton blind tags his way in. Of course, this leads to him immediately getting hit with Dream Street and that's it.
Winners via pinfall: Ted DiBiase & Brodus Clay
It's time for the Obstacle Course Challenge. This is a staple of NXT. Let's see if they can do it better than the rookie divas.
Novak is first. He clocks in at 37.9 seconds. Saxton, still selling from his match, is up next. He finishes at 1:02. O'Brian is next. He takes a nasty spill over the big wall. He finishes at 42.7. Bateman is next. He nearly crotches himself on the balance beam but still finishes at 35.7 seconds. Curtis clocks in at 34.8 seconds. Except he has been disqualified for falling off the beam and not completing it. Clay goes through it and pushes over the three walls. He goes down for the push-ups and tells the ref, "count 'em fool!" Then he finds out he's disqualified. He is upset. He throws a tire. Then Striker says Curtis is getting another shot at the course. Curtis finishes in 31.4, routing the field. The crowd boos.
Novak is backstage talking to Vickie Guerrero, getting some advice. Then Dolph Ziggler comes in and notes to Novak that Vickie is his girlfriend and tells him to scram and go watch the main event.
Match #2 - Alberto Del Rio vs. Derrick Bateman
Del Rio taking it to young Bateman in the early going. Del Rio charges Bateman in the corner but Bateman moves. He goes to work with punches and kicks and then hits a running neckbreaker for two. Bateman goes to hit a corner dropkick but Del Rio moves and posts Bateman. Then Del Rio locks in the armbar and Bateman has to tap.
Winner via submission: Alberto Del Rio
