Impact: Mickie, Tara meet in steel cage match
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on TNA Impact: The feud between Mickie James and Tara finally boils over. In a true wrestling rarity, the two square off in tonight's main event. But that's not the only rare part. After meeting in a street fight at Final Resolution, this time they do battle in a steel cage match that features quite possibly the biggest spot in televised women's wrestling history. Should be a good one!
As always, tonight's taped show emanates from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Fla. "The Professor" Mike Tenay and The Tazz are our hosts.
Earlier today, Eric Bischoff is backstage with Ric Flair, talking to all of Immortal. He says everything they achieved at Bound For Glory is in legal limbo. He notes that at Genesis, they need to win all the titles because with the gold comes power. He then addresses AJ Styles, who lost the World Television Championship to Douglas Williams on Sunday. He notes that loss means they lost leverage. He says no more losers.
Rhino comes in looking for the contract Bischoff offered him a few weeks ago. Bischoff writes "NO!" on a piece of paper and shows it to him. Rhino appeals for family purposes and tries to attack Bischoff but is pulled off.
We are into the Impact Zone and Immortal is on their way out. Bischoff introduces the TNA World Heavyweight Champion, Jeff Hardy. Bischoff talks some more and calls out Matt Morgan. Morgan comes out with a steel pipe and enters the ring. Bischoff puts Morgan over. He says Mr. Anderson cost Morgan the match at Final Resolution. Bischoff then signs Morgan against Anderson with the winner facing Hardy. Morgan said he spoke with Anderson last night and he's still not cleared to wrestle. Bischoff says Anderson is capable and if he doesn't, he can walk away because if he doesn't wrestle Morgan, he's out of TNA. Bischoff then demands his music be hit.
Match #1 - Brother Ray (New York City) & "Brother Devon" (New York City) vs. Jesse Neal (Orlando, Fla) & Shannon Moore (Whispering Pines, NC)
Ray cuts a promo saying anybody could be Devon so here we are. Taz explains this is one of Team 3D's students from their wrestling school.
Ray and Devon in control early. Ray goes for a butt drop but Moore moves. Devon in now. He goes for a flying headbutt but Moore moves and tags Neal. Neal running wild and he knocks Ray off the apron. Ray gets in, though, and they go for the "Wassup" headbutt and hits it. Ray tells him to get the tables. He does. Crowd chants "Shut up, fat boy," at Ray. As they set up the table, Neal spears Ray and Moore hits Devon with a dropkick. Then they hit Devon with the Mooregasm and that's it.
Winners via pinfall: Ink Inc.
After the match, Ray attacks "Devon" and goes to power bomb him through the table when real Devon makes the save.
To one-up Mickie James, Tara is out to perform her theme song, "Broken." This is comedically horrible. She has Generation Me out here sans shirts being backup dancers. She's dancing like a spa when James comes out and decks her. Except Gen Me grabs her. Tara hits her and Eric Young makes the save and battles Gen Me to the back. They brawl down to ringside when they are broken up by security. Predictably, they break through security and fight some more. James rolls into the ring and challenges Tara to a steel cage match later tonight. Tara accepts. James comes out of the ring and they brawl some more before being broken up again.
Beer Money is backstage with Gunner and Murphy and they ask them to soften up the Motor City Machine Guns for them.
Match #2 - Gunner & Murphy vs. Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin (Detroit, Mich.)
Gunner and Murphy gain the quick edge as the Guns are distracted by Beer Money going to commentary. Sabin gets the tag from Shelley and goes wild. He sends Murphy to the outside and they go to put Gunner away with Skull & Bones but Murphy comes back in and attacks with the nightstick. The referee calls for the bell.
Winners via disqualification: Motor City Machine Guns
The Guns gain control of the nightsticks and take it out on Gunner and Murphy.
Match #3 - TNA Knockout Tag Team Championship Tournament Semifinal Match - Daffney & Sarita vs. Angelina Love & Velvet Sky
Crowd loves Daffney, chanting for her when she's not in the match. Big pop for Daffney getting the tag. Double clothesline between Sarita and Sky lead to Daffney and Love getting in the mix. Love makes quick work of Daffney, hitting her with a reverse STO and getting the fall.
Winners via pinfall: Angelina Love & Velvet Sky
Don't really now how to describe what is happening now. The casket Pope was put in Sunday is wheeled out. Then a church choir comes out with some spiritual music dancing and stuff. Then Pope starts talking … from somewhere. It's a disembodied voice. He says a bunch of stuff. Then the choir goes prancing off. What???
Match #4 - TNA World Television Championship - (c) Douglas Williams (The United Kingdom) vs. Abyss (Parts Unknown)
Williams in control early but Abyss puts him down with a big boot. Chinlock for Abyss. Williams fire up out of it and goes for a sunset flip but, just like in the Team 3D match, Abyss tries to to drop down only to have Williams move. Williams with a running knee in the corner. He follows up with a flying European uppercut for two. He tries for the rolling Chaos Theory Suplex but Abyss hangs on and actually tears the padding off the turnbuckle. Williams kicks him and appears to be trying for the Styles Clash but Abyss has no part of that, backdropping him. Abyss tries to squish Williams in the exposed corner, but Williams moves. Abyss hits chest-first on the steel and he rolls up Abyss and pins him.
Winner via pinfall and STILL TNA World Television Champion: Douglas Williams
WIlliams is walking back-first up the ramp when Styles comes out and attacks him. He drills him with the Styles Clash on the ramp and gives him the bad mouth.
Jeff Jarrett is out for another fabulous edition of the Double J Double-M A Challenge. He says after tapping out Samoa Joe on Sunday, it's time to up the ante. He is going to offer one fan in the Impact Zone $100,000 of his own money if they can make him submit. Jarrett runs down a couple members of the audience. One of them gets particularly mad. He then calls out a rather skinny audience member with glasses and a hat. It's Mike from Brooklyn. Jarrett slaps him and tells him to take the hat and glasses off. Jarrett goes to work with vicious knees to the body. Crowd chants "Let's go Mike!" but he's quickly locked in a rear-naked choke and is forced to submit. Jarrett then straddles the top rope near the turnbuckle like an MMA fighter straddles the top of the cage after a victory. That was great.
Match #5 - Steel Cage Match - Mickie James (Richmond, Va.) vs. Tara (State of California)
Of course, this being TNA, they start brawling outside the cage before Tara can get in. James clotheslines her on the floor and then throws her into the ring.
Tara in control as we come back from break with a tilt-a-whirl sidewalk slam. James, though, gets going with some leaping clotheslines and such. Snapmare followed by a dropkick to the face for two for Mickie. Tara, though, pulls Mickie in the buckle and follows with a snap suplex into a guillotine choke. Mickie runs her into the corner. Mickie over the top rope in between the ropes and cage and Tara kicks her in the face, slamming her head into cage. This is back-and-forth.
Mickie climbs to the top turnbuckle and tries a head scissors but Tara turns it into a power bomb of sorts. Both are down after an awkward landing. Tara first to recover and she throws Mickie's body into the cage. Then she throws her into the other side. Tara tries to escape but Mickie stops her as a go to Reaction. Grrrrrrreat.
Tara drops Mickie with a big kick to the face. Mickie, though, slips out of the Widow's Peak and throws Tara into the cage. She does it again and Tara appears to be hurt and her right elbow area looks bad. She's going to be finishing this match with one arm. Tara tries to climb out with one arm but Mickie follows her up. James kicks Tara to the canvas and starts to climb. Mickie goes to the top and stops. She stands up and hits the now vertical Tara with what has to be the biggest Thesz Press in the history of professional wrestling and gets the pin.
Winner via pinfall: Mickie James
Wow. That was probably the craziest spot I've ever seen in a women's match. Unreal. Probably worth seeking out if you didn't see it. I don't claim to be an expert in women's wrestling, but if there's been a crazier spot in big-time women's wrestling, I'd love to know what it is.
