Angelina Love: 'I'm not like a bitch'
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
Besides being a Beautiful Person and half of the Beautiful People, Angelina Love has some serious in-ring talent.
The 29-year-old Torontonian, real name Lauren Williams, has come a long way since her debut as a manager some 10 years ago.
"At the time, I didn't know anything about wrestling, I just wanted to get involved," she says, as she readies herself for a Knockouts championship match at Sunday's TNA Bound for Glory pay-per-view (she'll face Velvet Sky, Madison Rayne and Tara in a four-way match).
She soon got bored of not being more involved and decided to learn the ropes and get into the ring.
"My mom was very upset when she found out I wanted to get into the ring," says Love. "I was 19 or 20, real skinny. I kept landing on my ass and hitting my head ... and my elbows were black and blue.
"One day I thought to myself: 'Damn, I need to get stronger.'"
She persevered, put in the time and got plenty of help from some great instructors. She was signed for WWE's developmental territory, but soon moved on.
"It was a traumatic wrestling experience," she says. "I was never really given a chance. I was training Diva Search girls."
There was soon to be a connection. Heading into TNA, she found a soulmate, somebody with the same sarcastic sense of humour -- Velvet Sky.
"We almost looked alike. Everybody was thinking, 'OK, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. We wanted to be called Velvet Love Entertainment, we wanted to make the name sexual, like a porn company. They gave us The Beautiful People name, instead. They wanted us as babyfaces, but we're both such natural heels."
She's happy with her role, happy with her company.
"TNA gave us the ball and we've run with it," she says. "This is what I've always wanted to do. I trained so hard to get here."
Her favourite wrestling moment, maybe something among her five Knockout reigns?
"I'd like to say it was the first time I won it, but I was unconscious, I couldn't even stand up," says Love, TNA's first four- and five-time Knockouts champ.
Love is also a proud Canadian, a card-carrying member of our "Eh Team."
"I love (Canada) to death," says Love, who sported a maple leaf bikini at her last TNA Canadian appearance a year ago (she also had her Sidney Crosby Team Canada jersey). "My heart is so happy when I think about it. Canadians love their own athletes and they support them 'til the day they die."
Even as a babyface, she doesn't change her personality much.
"I'm kind of a jerk as it is, in a funny, sarcastic way. But I'm not like a bitch," says Love. "With the whole babyface thing, we never say: 'Hey, clap for us.' Basically, it's if you don't love me, screw you."
She pauses and laughs.
"I certainly wouldn't take the 100% Angelina Love character anywhere but on TV ... or I would fail out of life and I would have no friends."
And her prediction for Sunday's pay-per-view match? Who'll win?
"Me," she says quickly.
Beautiful. Just Beautiful.
