ROH: Tag matches rule the night
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
Last week’s steel cage main event between Delirious and Austin Aries was a super match and this week’s main event should be equally as good as The Briscoes and Christopher Daniels take on ROH World champion Roderick Strong and The House of Truth.
Truth be told (pun intended), this one-hour show on HDNet is the only wrestling worth watching any day of the week on any cable system in any country.
Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak are our broadcasters and we get right to the action from The Arena in South Philadelphia.
Match #1 – Non-Title Match – The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli) w/ Sara Del Rey vs. The Super Smash Brothers (Player Uno & Player Dos)
This match sounds like the name of a very bad video game from the 1980s.
It’s actually a decent back-and-forth bout until Player Dos goes up top, but gets taken down by a Castagnoli superplex. A moonsault from Hero and this match is done.
Winners via pinfall: The Kings of Wrestling
Highlights from the Kings’ match with Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas from “Glory By Honor IX” is shown and then Haas and Benjamin give a quick interview hyping ROH and saying they’ll be back. I sure hope so.
Match #2 – Daizee Haze vs. Rachel Summerlyn
No Diva talk here, folks. These gals know how to wrestle. A pretty quick match that sees Daizee drill Rachel with a heart punch and then a German suplex for the duke.
Winner via pinfall: Daizee Haze
Kyle Durden is in the back with Daniels, who wonders what happened to Strong. Then the Briscoes show up and wonder the same thing. Daniels says he and the Briscoes are speaking the same language. I agree, but Daniels has a little less street twang in his dialect, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
More highlights from “Glory By Honor IX” and this package showed the Kevin Steen & Steve Corino-El Generico-Colt Cabana chain match, complete with the ending where Steen swiped Generico’s mask. Steen is then backstage talking to the mask. See, this is what I mean about feuds in ROH – they actually have life and they actually last. The Steen-Generico hatred has been going on for nine months now. Nine intense months at that, too.
Speaking of Generico, he faces Davey Richards on next week’s show.
Match #3 – Steve Corino vs. local Philly jobber
As Corino was entering the ring, Steen grabbed the mic and told the crowd they were going to see how to become a bully. You’d think the Philadelphia crowd would go for that, but Steen and Corino have so much heat that the crowd just despises them. You don’t get that on the other channel tonight.
In any event, Corino wins with his sliding clothesline, all the while Steen commentated on the match on the house mic. We also had a spot in the match where Corino stretched the poor kid and put his thumb, um, into the back nine. Steen commented that Corino did that to the kid’s mom last Wednesday and she loved it.
Winner via pinfall: Steve Corino
After the match, Corino pulled out a fork and went to attack his opponent, but Colt and Generico hit the ring for the save.
Another video recapped Strong winning the World title at “Glory By Honor IX” from Tyler Black.
Durden was standing backstage in what he called a "sea of truth" with Truth Martini, Strong, Christian Able and Josh Raymond. Truth talked through his nasally voice and I stopped paying attention. Strong said that he was done with always being the best friend and never the lover, and that is the gospel according to him. Good stuff here, minus Truth.
Match #4 – “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels & The Briscoes vs. Roderick Strong & The House of Truth (Christian Able & Josh Raymond) w/ Truth Martini
Daniels and Raymond started the match – advantage Daniels. Like our opening tag match, this bout had good flow and solid action. Lots of near-falls and the crowd was giddy throughout.
Daniels gets a hot tag and cleaned house on Able and Raymond and hit the Fall From Grace on Strong. Jay hit a Death Valley Driver on Able, but Raymond countered with his shooting star crossbody on Jay. Mark came in and threw him to ringside and hit a top rope moonsault to the outside.
In the ring, Truth went to hit Daniels with his book, but missed. Roderick went for a backbreaker, but Daniels rolled him up for two. He went off the ropes, only for Truth to trip him. Strong hit his gutbuster finisher and got the pin on Daniels.
Winners via pinfall: Roderick Strong & The House of Truth
All in all, an excellent show this week and ROH shows why they are not just another wrestling show on Monday night, but the only wrestling show on Monday nights.
'Til next week, folks.
Matt Mackinder remembers where he was on this day 11 years ago – taking in the final game at Tiger Stadium. ROH wasn’t around until three years later. Email Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
