Opinion: Two words for ya -- grow up!And stop being a fame-seeking bimbo while you’re at it, Pinky
By KEVIN ENGSTROM - Winnipeg Sun Columnist
It takes an extraordinary effort to make a man who cheats on his wife appear to be a victim.
As we’ve found out in the last couple days, Deborah Simmons is no ordinary woman.
The 24-year-old Winnipegger happily admits to having an affair with Monty Sopp, who in case you didn’t know is former WWE midcarder Billy Gunn.
Her claims she was bothered the whole time by the inconvenient little fact he was a married man are betrayed by the euphoric glee she displays in her newfound celebrity as the local tart.
There’s little in the way of news when a has-been pro wrestler partakes in some extracurricular activity with a female fan, nor should anybody particularly care when a jilted mistress opts for revenge by telling her ex-lover’s wife all about it. Neither of those things are by any means right, but it unfortunately happens all the time.
What does make this news, though, is the absolute callousness shown by Simmons in deciding to post every little detail about her adulterous affair to Facebook and YouTube. It’s not so much that she displayed such breathtakingly ugly behaviour, but that she took such satisfaction while doing it, happily reporting the tens of thousands of web hits her YouTube channel had received daily since the story she manufactured herself went viral. To this, I’ve got two words for ya, Deborah: grow up.
Clearly, Simmons — who likes to be called “Pinky” (seriously) — is enjoying her time as the centre of attention, even though that involves much of Winnipeg denouncing her as a homewrecker or worse. What this says about her as a person is not flattering.
Add in her ridiculous demand of an apology from the man formerly known as Mr. Ass (again, seriously) and you have a self-destructive woman who is either delusional or itching to get a reaction out of people — even if it’s overwhelmingly negative. Or both. Frankly, the girl could use some couch time with a shrink to sort it all out.
Make no mistake, Pinky, we’re not absolving your former lover here. Sopp is obviously a heel who deserves his comeuppance for cheating on his wife. That’s certainly not the behaviour of a good guy or, to borrow a wrestling term, a babyface.
But that comeuppance should come from Mrs. Ass — the real victim in this mess — not his fame-seeking mistress. By combining such vindictive behaviour with obvious nonsense that you’re somehow the wronged person in this mess, you’ve only made Sopp appear more sympathetic. That’s no small feat.
More importantly, by gloating over the fact you slept with another woman’s man in such a public way, you’ve only validated every hater who thinks awful things of you, a population that has grown significantly in the past week as word has gotten out. This is not something to be proud of. You should strive to be better than this.
As it is, the impression you’ve left on Winnipeggers is that of a fame-seeking bimbo who might possibly be crazy. For the sake of your family, here’s hoping that impression fades with time.
