Superstars: Bourne flies high in the main event
By MATT JOHNSON - SLAM! Wrestling

We are on the road to Summerslam. There has been some great storytelling on Raw the past few weeks. It is some of the best programming I have seen in two years. My only complaint is Bret Hart being thrown in a tag match on Raw. Bret Hart is a great attraction, but I am wondering why they would expose the fact that he cannot really work anymore on television. This question may answer itself Monday.

The good news is that Michael Cole is not the first voice we hear tonight on Superstars.. And no, it is not his heel character on NXT that makes so many hate him. It his geeky, boring announcing.

Match #1 -Tiffany vs. Layla

Tiffany gets in some very “loose” punches and works Layla’s arm early. The fans jeer the lousy wrestling. The action spills to the floor. Michelle McCool gives Tiffany a kick to the hamstring as Tiffany tries to re-enter the ring. Layla works over Tiffany’s injured leg. Tiffany fights back and hits a bulldog from the corner and then a suplex. Tiffany misses a flying cross body and Layla hits the Lay Out (formerly known as the Rude Awakening) and gets the pin.

Winner via pinfall: Layla

The NXT recap airs. They made the rookies kiss a fat girl with warts. I remember when Jack Briscoe first got over by kissing a fat girl in the ring because the promoter made him.

Match #2 –The Dudebusters vs. Curt Hawkins & Vance Archer

Matt Stryker said “wrestling.” Someone is in trouble. Croft and Baretta work over Shannon Moore, I mean Curt Hawkins (does anyone else see the resemblance?). Archer tags in and the Dudebusters double team him. Croft climbs the top rope, but Archer throws him to the floor. Commercial.

After the break, Hawkins is kneeing Croft in the spine and applies a chinlock. Archer tags in and hits a kick to the face and a belly-to-belly suplex. Croft works his way out of Hawkins’s chin lock and tags in Baretta who hits a clothesline and a springboard dropkick. Archer tags in when Hawkins is thrown against the rope. Archer hits a boot to the face of Baretta and hits the Difference Maker. Hawkins tags in and hits the Heat Seeking Elbow and gets the pin.

Winner via pinfall: Curt Hawkins & Vance Archer

A preview airs for John Cena’s new movie. It is not an action movie with the same plot this time. I actually plan to watch it.

Did you know that John Cena designed a new 7-Eleven coffee cup, and all proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation?

A video airs on the Miz. Then the Raw Rebound airs.

Match #3 –Evan Bourne vs. Zack Ryder

The main events have been a little weak lately. The announcers talk about Raw and Summerslam and ignore the match. As a community service, I pay attention. Ryder is on offense early. Bourne hits some nice dropkicks and sends Ryder to the floor. Bourne dives from the top rope to the floor, but Ryder moves. Commercial time.

Ryder applies a headlock after the break. Ryder attacks Bourne in the corner and hits a boot to the face. Bourne hits some kicks to the leg and mid-section. Bourne tries a flying head scissors, but Ryder catches hits a power bomb. Both men climb to the top. Bourne backdrops Ryder off the rope and hits Air Bourne for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Evan Bourne

Decent action in the main event, but I am not sure that Zack Ryder qualifies as a main event wrestler, even on Superstars. I say there is money in Bourne as a main event wrestler. Fans enjoy his work in the ring and if he is treated like a top star, he can raise the match quality on the top of the card.
