WWE NXT: Rookies try to sell out
MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on WWE NXT: An interesting is on tap for the eight NXT rookies this week as they are charged with the task of selling programs to the WWE Universe. Elsewhere, Heath Slater looks to continue his winning ways after beating Chris Jericho last week. Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from Hershey, Pa. Michael Cole and Josh Mathews are our commentators. Matt Striker is our host. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG, V)
As has been the case the past few weeks, Striker is in the ring with the rookies.
This week's challenge is the "Seal the Deal Challenge" which will send each rookie into the crowd to sell as much merchandise as possible in a 60-second timeframe. The rookie with the most cash at the end will earn a match against the pro of his choosing.
Skip Sheffield is up first and he sells four programs for $60. This challenge will continue later in the show.
Match #1 - Christian (Toronto, Ontario) & Heath Slater (Pineville, WV) vs. Chris Jericho (Winnipeg, Manitoba) & Wade Barrett (Manchester, England)
Jericho and Barrett control the early portion of the match but Jericho gets caught by Christian and tags Slater in. He runs wild on Jericho. He hits a neckbreaker and Barrett has to break up the pin attempt. Christian comes in and knocks Barrett out of the ring and hits a slingshot crossbody to the floor. In the ring, Jericho goes for the Walls of Jericho but Slater counters, like last week, into a small package, but Jericho kicks out. Slater comes back and walks right into a Codebreaker.
Winners via pinfall: Chris Jericho & Wade Barrett
Next up is Daniel Bryan, who, instead of selling programs, just hands his change money off to a kid and then empties his satchel of programs by throwing them to the fans. Total sold: $0.
Earlier today, Carlito has Michael Tarver carry his bag into the building.
We're back with more of the challenge with Justin Gabriel and he sells an incredible 22 programs for $210.
Match #2 - Michael Tarver (Akron, Ohio) vs. Darren Young (Miami, Fla.)
Young gets the upper hand early and Tarver takes a walk but just uses it to take the edge on the chasing Young. Tarver is gaining the edge but Serena takes the ref and Luke Gallows comes and swipes Tarver off the apron. With that, Young hits his full nelson face-buster for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Darren Young
Next up to sell some programs is Davis Otunga. He has some kids help him sell them because A-listers don't do manual labour. He does well and calls himself "Money Otunga." He sells $315 worth.
They do a video package on Gabriel and CM Punk thinks Matt Hardy is holding him back because "I don't know what Matt Hardy is going to be able to teach Justin Gabriel besides how to MySpace or Twitter." HA!
It's Heath Slater's turn. He's kind of a mess, dropping programs and money everywhere. He does OK. We are not told how much he sells.
Now it's Darren Young's turn. He struggles. We do not get a total.
Next up is Michael Tarver. This should be good. Tarver said he doesn't have to sell anything, WWE should sell him. He just walks away, screaming "I am the product!"
Finally, Wade Barrett is up. He says he's already proven tonight he's the No. 1 rookie on NXT because he won earlier. He cuts a promo saying he's going to take the change money, put it in his back pocket and leave. He does just that. Great stuff.
Backstage, Striker welcomes the winner, David Otunga. Otunga says he wants to face his pro, R-Truth, next week.
Match #3 - The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio) vs. Skip Sheffield (College Station, Texas)
The Miz has a pretty big-time makeup job selling his punch from Big Show last night.
Miz has a microphone and sells the punch while speaking. He says because of the punch, he will not be able to compete. So his rookie, Daniel Bryan, will take his place.
Match #3 - Daniel Bryan (Aberdeen, Wash.) vs. Skip Sheffield (College Station, Texas)
Bryan goes to work on Sheffield with kicks. He goes into the guard and lands a bunch of body blows. He locks on the heel hook but Sheffield gets the ropes. He hits some body kicks but Sheffield catches one and then hits a clothesline that spins Bryan. Then he hits his finish, which is tough to explain, but involves putting Bryan on his back with chin on head then dropping down. That's it. Daniel Bryan moves to 0-9.
Winner via pinfall: Skip Sheffield
