Smackdown: Highlight Reel return successful for Jericho
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on Friday Night Smackdown: WrestleMania is coming up sooner than you think. It must be a pretty big deal because World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho is bring back the Highlight Reel following nearly two years of dormancy. His guest? Only his opponent at WrestleMania 26 — Edge.
And we are TAPED! from Seattle, Wash. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG, V)
We open with Rey Mysterio, who hits the ring with his wife and two children, including his son, who already is bigger than he is.
Mysterio says sometimes when WWE superstars are on the road, they miss out on things. Tonight is his daughter's 9th birthday. The crowd fires up a "happy birthday" chant. He starts singing happy birthday to her when CM Punk's music fires up.
So Punk, Luke Gallows and Serena make their way to the ring. He says to not stop on account of him and picks up the song where it left off to thunderous boos. She holds her ears and hugs her dad. Punk says he's here to challenge Mysterio to a match at WrestleMania and to challenge him to a match tonight, as well — right now. Mysterio says this is not the time as his daughter starts to cry. Punk says as his birthday present to her, he'll let her shut her eyes as he makes her daddy cry. He then moves on to Mysterio's son and then his wife. He then calls Mysterio a coward. Punk even says he'll drop down to Mysterio's level to fight him and drops down to his knees. He then slaps Mysterio, who then sends his family out of the ring and follows them out. Mysterio kicks the steps in anger on the way out as Punk says he's taking his "walk of shame." Then Punk fires up another rendition of "Happy Birthday" to his daughter to even louder boos than before.
Match #1 - The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio) vs. R-Truth (Charlotte, N.C.)
They trade roll-ups for two counts each. Truth goes for a scissors kick but Miz moves out of the way and takes him down for a cover with his feet on the ropes. His NXT rookie, Daniel Bryan, doesn't like it and shoves Miz's feet off the ropes. Miz is fuming and gets hit with the Lie Detector and that's it.
Winner via pinfall: R-Truth
Drew McIntyre is walking backstage when he runs into Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long. Long says Mr. McMahon has eradicated his losses the last two weeks and he'll get a third chance this week to qualify for Money in the Bank. Long also says McMahon has hand-picked McIntyre's opponent for tonight. He says he can't change the match, but he can add to it, so it will be an Intercontinental Title match, as well.
Match #2 - Intercontinental Championship - (c) Drew McIntyre (Ayr, Scotland) vs. Aaron Bolo (Seattle, Wash.)
Bolo is announced as a three-time Washington state wrestling champion and a mixed martial arts champion in the light-heavyweight division. I laughed heartily.
As expected, McIntyre squash.
Winner via pinfall and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Drew McIntyre
Match #3 - The Big Show (Tampa, Fla.) vs. John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Big Show just dominating early, including booting Morrison straight out of the ring. But Morrison gets back in the ring barely and gets going, hitting a missile dropkick for two, but Show with a power kick out. Morrison goes for a springboard kick but instead is swatted right out of the air with the knockout punch and pinned.
Winner via pinfall: The Big Show
Tiffany is backstage with Long, who welcomes her back to the fold. Tiffany asks about Mickie James and Long says she is fine. Then Vickie Guerrero comes in. Guerrero says Tiffany is the reason ECW got cancelled and that she should go back to being the resident babysitter and stop stepping on people's toes. Long tells her to calm down and that Tiffany is here to compete. So Guerrero tells Tiffany to get her gear on, because tonight, she'll be facing Michelle McCool
Match #3 - The Hart Dynasty (Calgary, Alberta) vs. Cryme Tyme (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Tyson Kidd quickly goes to work on JTG's knee, ringing it into the post multiple times and locking in a half-crab when the familiar dong hits and the lights go out. When they come back up, Undertaker is in the ring and is beating up everybody. It's a chokeslam for Shad. A Last Ride for Kidd. A Tombstone for David Hart Smith and finally a Hell's Gate for JTG.
Match #4 - Michelle McCool (Palatka, Fla.) vs. Tiffany (New Orleans, La.)
After being mocked, Tiffany goes wild on McCool, hitting a dropkick and kicking McCool through the ropes to the floor. She starts smacking McCool's head into the ring apron. She hits a back elbow and throws McCool into the barricade. She goes to throw McCool into the ring apron and Guerrero just hits the best shoulderblock of all-time on Tiffany.
Winner via disqualification: Tiffany
The heels beat Tiffany down until Beth Phoenix makes the save and dispatches of McCool and Layla. Then she grabs Guerrero and acts like she's going to let her go until she pulls her back in for a clothesline. Phoenix checks on Tiffany and raises her hand.
Match #5 - Luke Gallows (Parts Unknown) vs. Kane (Hell, Fire & Brimstone)
Kane with an uppercut and he hits a back elbow and then — you guessed it — a sidewalk slam for two. Striker gets in a line about it being Kane vs. bizarro Kane, making a pseudo-reference to when Gallows portrayed the fake Kane back in 2006. Kane then hits the flying clothesline and goes for a chokeslam but Gallows elbow him and hits a short clothesline. The momentum doesn't last long as Kane hits the chokeslam, but before he can make the cover, Punk hits the ring and attacks.
Winner via disqualification: Kane
After the match, Punk hoists Kane up and hits the GTS. He stands over Kane when Mysterio's music hits. He slowly walks down the ramp, takes off his dress shirt and watch and gets in the ring as Punk heads out. Mysterio pursues and it's on. Mysterio dumps Punk into the crowd and they brawl in the crowd as a bunch of referees and agents try to gain control. Punk breaks free and hightails it up the ramp.
Chris Jericho makes his way to the ring for the return of The Highlight Reel, including the new Jeriton 5000, which appears to be fully healed after having Shawn Michaels' head smashed through it on that fateful day in 2008.
Edge's music is off for about two seconds before the crowd starts chanting "spear!"
Jericho quickly brings up how many WrestleMania's and how much time Edge has missed due to injury and how his only success was when he was with Vickie Guerrero. Edge says touche, but everybody has that girlfriend they regret being with. For him, it was Guerrero, for Jericho, it was the Big Show.
Jericho claims that Edge is still injured and it will be his downfall at 'Mania. At WrestleMania, Jericho says he's not only going to beat him, but he's going to hurt him and send him home for another six months.
Edge says he's going to do something at WrestleMania as well: Make Jericho an ex-champion by hitting him with a spear. Jericho then hits Edge with the microphone and beats him with a stool. Jericho goes to throw Edge through the Jeritron 5000 but Edge stops him and hits the Edgecution DDT. He then lines Jericho up for the spear and goes for it, but Jericho drills him with the World Heavyweight Championship and lays him out in the middle of the ring.
