Superstars: Mysterio flies high on Thursday night
By MATT JOHNSON - SLAM! Wrestling

It is often said that voters need to consider the issues most important to them personally. The same concept applies to consumers. While fans have debated the pros and cons of replacing ECW with NXT, I feel forced to share my dismay with the programming change. Don’t get me wrong, NXT might be a really innovative concept. But I have to consider the issues most important to me. I am likely going to have to deal with twice as much Michael Cole on Thursday nights. Thanks Vince!

Speak of the devil, Cole started out the show. Life is about to get more challenging. Major star alert! Rey Mysterio is on the show tonight. Such big names have not been gracing Superstars with their presence lately. The kiddies should be excited.

Match #1 - Evan Bourne & Primo Colon vs. Chavo Guerrero & Carlito

We start out with the flip, flop, and flyers. Bourne starts out with kicks and a nice arm drag on Carlito. Cool looking exchange as Bourne tries to bridge and Chavo jumps on top of him, but Bourne knocks Chavo away. Primo tags in and hits some dropkicks on Chavo. Primo tries to jump off the top rope, but Carlito knocks him off. Carlito tags in and Primo fights his way back and hits a lateral press. Carlito throws him to the floor and it is off to commercial.

Chavo is beating on Primo after the break. Chavo hits a Gory Bomb, but only gets a two. OK, that move should be a finisher that works every time. Primo tries to fights his way back against Carlito, but misses a leg drop. Both men make tags and Bourne hits the highlight reel on Chavo and a sweet dropkick on Carlito. Primo hits the backstabber on Carlito and Chavo hits a knee to the chin of Chavo. After the Air Bourne, Bourne pins Chavo.

Winner via pinfall: Evan Bourne & Primo Colon

A commercial airs for the selection Antonio Inoki into the WWE Hall of Fame. A worthy selection by any scale. It is rare for WWE to select foreign wrestlers for the Hall, however. A commercial also airs for the show that is causing me to double my dosage of Michael Cole each Thursday night.

I just spilled a bunch of water on myself. Crap. Now I just feel uncomfortable. I am too lazy to get up and change shirts.

Match #2 – Gail Kim vs. Katie Lea Burchill

Lots of back and forth action early. Gail Kim gets sent into the ring post and Katie Lea gets a two count. Katie Lea attacks the shoulder Gail Kim injured on the ring post. Not many wrestlers work the shoulder. The broadcast teams talk about the shoulder injury harming Gail Kim’s chances on Sunday. Gail hits some clotheslines and a flying cross body. Gail hits a missile dropkick for another two count. Katie Lea fights back by attacking the injured shoulder, but Gail Kim hits the face breaker for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Gail Kim

After the match, the very sexy Maryse stands at the top of the ramp, previewing Sunday’s match. A commercial airs for the new John Morrison DVD.

After the break, a video airs profiling Chris Jericho. The Smackdown announce team introduces a video promoting Elimination Chamber. Rey Mysterio enters the ring before the next commercial. After the break, it is mentioned in the “Did You Know” graphic that no WWE Superstar has ever won the Elimination Chamber more than once, except Triple H, who has won four. Hmm, is there anything else Triple H has that nobody else does???

Match #3 – Rey Mysterio vs. Mike Knox

Knox uses his massive size advantage to dominate Rey after the opening bell. Knox hits a leg drop and gets a two count. Rey tries to fight his way back but Knox catches him and applies a back breaker. After some failed attempts to turn the match around, Rey hits a kick and an elbow. Knox leaves the ring and Rey tries a hurricanrana, but Knox throws him into the post. Commercial time.

Rey tries to fight out of a submission hold after the break, but Knox continues his assault with a torture rack. Knox throws Rey into the air on to his knee. Knox ducks his head and Rey finally gets some offense with a kick. Rey pulls the top rope down, sending Knox outside. Rey hits altitude on Knox. With Knox back in the ring, Rey hits a spring board leg drop for a two count. Knox hits his own flying cross body for a two count. Knox hits a slam, but misses a knee, allowing Rey to hits a 619 and a headbutt from the top rope to get the three count.

Winner via pinfall: Rey Mysterio

Awesome main event for Superstars. The announcers promote Rey as a competitor in the Elimination Chamber. Check out our report next week to find out what happens.
