On the Edge of greatness
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
The Rated R Superstar may no longer be Rated R, given WWE’s increasingly family-friendly productions, but he’s still an impact player.
Edge returned to action with a bang Sunday, winning WWE’s Royal Rumble.
Last July 3, Edge suffered a torn Achilles tendon and it was reported he could be out of action for a year. Using his Canadian resiliency, Edge, a 36-year-old, nine-time world champion, was the 29th entrant into the Rumble and eliminated John Cena to earn the right to face his choice of WWE champs. Edge still has a score to settle with Chris Jericho, but that may be on the back burner now.
Jack Brisco, one of the finest wrestlers of the 1970s and early ’80s, died Monday after complications from open heart surgery. Brisco, part of a hugely successful tag team with brother Gerry, was 68.
ECW will soon be gone, replaced apparently by something called NXT, a training ground for developing stars. Regular readers of this little corner of the wrestling world know I was a big fan of the original ECW product, not so much of what we see on TV each week. It also has to mean ECW champ Christian, long a favourite here, will move
on to better things, hopefully on RAW.
Around the ring
Beth Phoenix was entered in the Rumble and eliminated The Great Khali ... Hulk Hogan is picking the New Orleans Saints to beat the Indianapolis Colts 35-6 in Sunday’s Super Bowl. My mind tells me the Colts will win, but I’m pulling for the Saints (I’ll say 31-27). Who Dat? ... Mickie James is the new WWE women’s champ ... John Cena had an MRI to check on his back and neck pain. The docs believe he should heal with a little rest.
