ECW: Large challenge awaits Christian at Rumble
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Syfy: The long-awaited ECW Homecoming Finale is here. The eight-man over the top rope challenge will determine the No. 1 contender for Christian's ECW Championship at the Royal Rumble. Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from Green Bay, Wisc. Josh Mathews and Byron Saxton are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Rosa Mendes makes her way to the ring, which is quite the interesting way to start the show. She's here to welcome the man who ended Tommy Dreamer's career — Zack Ryder.
He says it's a big night for them because everyone is here to celebrate the new heart and soul of ECW — Zack Ryder. He says he's the one man above the ECW Championship, he is ECW.
The Hurricane then makes his way to the ring. He tells Ryder to please shut up. Hurricane says he's not the heart and soul, he's more like the rear-end of ECW because that's what he's talking out of. Mendes takes the mic and does her best Daivari impression, only speaking Spanish. Hurricane asks if he can press 1 for English and Mendes slaps him. So Hurricane takes out Ryder and sends him out of the ring.
Match #1 - Zack Ryder (Long Island, N.Y.) vs. The Hurricane (A Galaxy Far Away)
So, uh, they come back from break and this match is just going on. Apparently Tiffany made it during the break.
Ryder controls the bout through much of the early-going but Hurricane begins his comeback. He goes to the top for a crossbody but Ryder knocks him off the rope and finishes him with the Zack Attack.
Winner via pinfall: Zack Ryder
Match #2 - Goldust (Hollywood, Calif.) vs. Trent Barreta (Mount Sinai, N.Y.)
Goldust sends Barreta off the ropes and then hits him with his backside and sends him over the top rope. But Barreta takes over after catching Goldust charging at him.
Eventually, they start trading holds. Goldust goes for his finish but Barreta backs out and walks front-first into the corner where Goldust starts attacking him. As the referee breaks it up, Barreta hits Goldust with a cheap back elbow that sends him reeling. He charges at Goldust with a flying knee that puts the Bizarre One down.
Winner via pinfall: Trent Barreta
ECW General Manager Tiffany is out to introduce her brainchild. Vintage Tiffany.
Match #3 - ECW Homecoming Finale - CM Punk (Chicago, Ill.) vs. Yoshi Tatsu (Tokyo, Japan) vs. Ezekiel Jackson (Harlem, N.Y) vs. Evan Bourne (St. Louis, MO) vs. Shelton Benjamin (Orangeburg, S.C.) vs. Matt Hardy (Cameron, N.C.) vs. Vance Archer (Dallas, Texas) vs. Kane (Hell, Fire & Brimstone)
Benjamin attacks Archer as he gets in the ring, supposedly because of their "feud" that started a few weeks back that I completely didn't remember at all.
The other six (sans Archer) attack Kane dumb ninja-style. Kane almost immediately sends Bourne out. Sucks to be him. So we're down to seven.
In the midst of the battle royal, Kane still manages to hit the sidewalk slam.
We go to the break and Bourne still is the only one eliminated.
We're back and still no one else has been eliminated. Archer gets put out to the apron and Benjamin eliminates both himself and Archer with a dive.
So we're down to five now. Still sucks to be Evan Bourne. Hardy goes for a crossbody but lands right in the arms of Jackson. Jackson throws Hardy over the top but Hardy skins the cat. Instead of letting him propel back up, Big Zeke just kicks him down. Hardy eliminated. That ruled.
Down to four — Tatsu, Punk, Jackson and Kane. Jackson drills both Kane and Punk and then eliminates Punk. Down to our final three and I must say I'm surprised.
Tatsu goes to bulldog Kane out of the corner but Kane just picks him up and dispatches him. Tatsu eliminated.
So we're at the final two — Kane and Jackson. The winner faces Christian at the Royal Rumble.
They do battle and Kane goes for the flying clothesline but Jackson ducks. Kane ends up right by the ropes and Jackson clubs him over the top.
ECW Homecoming Winner: Ezekiel Jackson
Jackson now has earned a shot at Christian's ECW Championship at the Royal Rumble.
