Dreamer release now official
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling

After one of the most memorable sendoffs in WWE history, Tommy Dreamer was officially released by WWE today.

The news broke in a release today, with a note on WWE.com stating, "World Wrestling Entertainment has come to terms on the release of ECW Superstar Tommy Dreamer as of today, Monday, January 4, 2010. We wish Tommy the best in all future endeavors."

While the story of Dreamer's departure from the Fed has been known for a couple weeks and was all but made official last week following Dreamer's goodbye speech on ECW's Tuesday night broadcast, there had been speculation that the two-time ECW champ would stay on with the company in a behind-the-scenes role.

Dreamer, real name Thomas Laughlin, came to WWE in the WCW/ECW InVasion angle back in 2001 and had been one of the longest-serving members of the current WWE roster. His debut alongside fellow ECW alumn Tommy Dreamer brought the rebel organization into the WCW vs. WWF storyline. He would achieve moderate success in WWE, at one point winning the now-defunct Hardcore Title.

It wasn't until ECW was fully reborn, however, that Dreamer really had a consistent role in WWE. He would appear on a regular basis on the Tuesday night show, joining the ECW Originals during a feud with the New Breed. Dreamer would also gain the ECW Championship in 2009, amidst an angle in which he stated he would retire if he did not win the brand's most coveted title.

After losing the belt, Dreamer would be featured on-and-off on ECW, primarily against the man who he would ultimately have hist last match with - Zack Ryder.

Dreamer, of course, is best known for his lengthy tenure in the original ECW. He first gained prominence in the famous caning angle with The Sandman, and would become embroiled in a years-long feud with Raven. Dreamer would eventually be a co-holder of the ECW Tag Team championships with Raven, one of three runs he had with the belts (he also held them while teaming with Masato Tanaka and Johnny Gunn). Dreamer would also hold the original promotion's Heavyweight title.
