SLAM! Wrestling book a winner
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
The SLAM! Wrestling website is a treasure chest of wrestling stories.
And now many of them are finding a whole new life -- on the pages of the SLAM! Wrestling: Shocking Stories from the Squared Circle book that's fresh out at bookstores everywhere.
Full disclosure would reveal that I'm a bit biased. Three of my stories are on those pages: Interviews with Hulk Hogan (saying he's a team player and that he's gone along with storylines even when he knew they were a bad idea), JBL (saying "way too many wrestlers have died") and Ric Flair (my favourite, in which I got an hour of his time sitting in the stands of the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.). There's also a pic of me getting mugged by Abdullah the Butcher and another treasured moment cuddling with Kelly Kelly.
But there's some great stuff here, stories that stand the test of time.
"The idea was percolating for a while," says Greg Oliver, the long-time driving force behind the popular SLAM! Wrestling site. Oliver was given a large hand by another SLAMMER, Jon Waldman.
"I'm the only one who's been around for the 13 years and I remember all these stories. There are some wonderful pieces of journalism. I'd put Jamie Kreiser's three pieces on Barry Orton up against almost anything. A few of the first-person pieces really stand out ... Bret Hart and Johnny Devine. And there's a great wacky piece with The Ultimate Warrior."
