We’ll miss Captain Lou
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

While guys like Hulk Hogan and his prayers and vitamins get a lot of the credit for taking wrestling to the next level, Captain Lou Albano, with rubber bands sticking out through his goatee, played a role, too. A pretty big role.

Albano, the antagonistic manager of 15 tag-team and four individual champions, died Wednesday at age 76. It was Albano’s involvement with Cyndi Lauper as the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection that helped push wrestling into the mainstream. It was the early days of MTV and wrestling’s involvement with cutting-edge music videos gave it a new identity — a new audience.

Albano, whose wrestling debut came in Montreal against Bob Lazaro in 1953, was a larger-than-life character — a cartoon.

He managed in a day when managers mattered — when they could be as devious and villainous as the wrestlers themselves.

ECW’s brainiac and former manager Paul Heyman recalled Albano, who was born in Italy: “Every trip with Lou was a similar adventure. He was loud, obnoxious, insane, and yet in many ways one of the most endearing human beings you’ll ever meet.”

Amen.

AROUND THE RING

You may need a scorecard to follow all of this, but Melina is the new Divas champ after beating Jillian Hall, who beat Mickie James on RAW. Following the show, there was a major Diva deal, with Melina, Eve and the Bella twins going to RAW, Beth Phoenix and James going to Smackdown! and Rosa Mendes going to ECW ... Snoop Dogg will host RAW on Monday ... With rumours of WWE bringing back War Games, my first reaction is why not? And while they’re at it, bring back Halloween Havoc. Sure beats the hell out of Bragging Rights.
