Let champs be champs
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Why can't WWE let its champions be champions -- at least for more than a month or two?

Whatever happened to letting a guy wear a championship belt for awhile, let him build some momentum, maybe run through programs with four or five of the top contenders? It should be special when a champion is crowned. But it's become far from special.

Nothing against The Undertaker (who beat CM Punk for the world title) and Randy Orton (who beat John Cena for the WWE belt), but a lot of lustre was taken out of the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

The WWE title, which originated in 1963 when it was won by Buddy Rogers (it was then known as the WWWF belt) has had 39 different champs, with Triple H winning it eight times. Bruno Sammartino once held it for more than seven years. They're lucky to hold it for seven minutes now. The world title, won first by Triple H in 2002, has had 16 different champs. and Edge both have five title reigns. Batista once held it for 282 days.

I guess it could be worse. Andre the Giant held the WWF title for 45 seconds (when he handed it over to Ted DiBiase, who "bought" the belt), while Jeff Hardy held the world title for all of two minutes in June.

There's something to be said for continuity. But WWE and TNA seem to enjoy the itchy trigger finger. And there's nothing special about that.

Around the ring

Kudos to Ben Roethlisberger and his Pittsburgh Steelers linemen. Best performance by a RAW guest host so far! Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell and actress Maria Menounos are the next hosts. Maybe the reason why will become more apparent on Monday night ... The Miz is the new U.S. champ ... Ken Anderson (Mr. Kennedy) is the new Nu Wrestling Evolution champ.
