Smackdown: MOTY from the IC title match?
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling

Welcome to the first Smackdown in the new post Jeff Hardy era, and the last for Rey Mysterio Jr. before he enters the land of suspension. Yes, it’s a transitional show folks, which could be interesting, especially with only a couple weeks remaining until we head to Breaking Point.

We kick off with CM Punk coming out in full Jeff Hardy gear, fooling fans and really getting a super heel reaction as a result of it. He then cuts another fantastic promo on Jeff before moving onto The Undertaker. He starts teasing about the Anaconda Vice when Matt Hardy comes out onto the rampway and attacks the champ.

Backstage after a break, Teddy Long makes a non-title match between Punk and Matt Hardy while talking to the champ.

Match 1 – The Great Khali/Finlay vs. Mike Knox/Kane

As the match is introduced, we learn there will be a Singapore Cane match between Khali and Kane at BP.

The match somehow stretches over a commercial break, even though it’s really not that much to speak of. Standard Finlay finish with the International Object smash. God I hate that.

Winners: Khali/Finlay

Backstage, Vince McMahon walks in on Long watching the WCW DVD. Vinnie is sporting a strawberry shake suit jacket (or Pepto Bismol if you prefer). McMahon compliments Long on his matchmaking from last week.

Back from a break, Maria and Eve are getting ready for a match when Michelle McCool hobbles in. God I hate her. Have I said that lately? The brunt of the scene is Michelle’s injury and Dolph Ziggler being a slimeball. God this is going nowhere. This is really, really bad. If they’re going to turn Maria heel, then just do it already.

Match 2 – John Morrison vs. Rey Mysterio (Intercontinental Title match)

Well, we know the result, but what you don’t know is that this was a fantastic match if you didn’t see it. Do whatever you need to do to watch this bout. Torrent, YouTube, it doesn’t matter. I don’t want to spoil this match at all for those who haven’t seen it, except that Morrison wins. We’ve got ourselves another MOTY high-ranker folks.

Winner: John Morrison

Post-match, the two grapplers embrace.

Match 3 – R-Truth vs. ???

The match isn’t even announced before Drew MacIntyre jumps R-Truth for the second week in a row.

After the attack, MacIntyre promises to keep breaking up matches until he’s recognized as the superstar he is.

Winner: No Match

Match 4 – Maria/Eve vs. Natalya/Layla

Match is fairly solid, with Eve again impressing, finishing the bout for her team with a handspring standing moonsault.

Winners: Maria/Eve

Backstage, Josh Mathews interviews Matt Hardy about the upcoming match.

Match 5 – CM Punk vs. Matt Hardy (non-title)

Another solid match here, but the finish really sucked, as Punk beats Hardy down with a chair until the match is essentially thrown out, rather than utilizing the Anaconda Vice. We actually don’t get a decision, only the Undertaker appearing and chokeslamming Punk through the announce table after Punk brutalized Hardy with a chair.

Winner: No Contest

Well, we had some great build here and a possible MOTY candidate. We seem to say that every week about Smackdown, so all the power to Friday nights!

See you in seven.
