Rey Mysterio suspended by WWE
By SLAM! Wrestling Staff

In its first suspension in a few months, WWE announced that Rey Mysterio has been pulled off its roster for a 30-day period due to a Wellness Policy violation.

As announced on wwe.com, the suspension takes effect Wednesday, September 2. "In accordance with WWE's Wellness Program, effective Wednesday, September 2, Oscar Gutierrez (Rey Mysterio) is suspended for 30 days for a violation of the company’s policy," WWE stated on its website.

This is Gutierrez's first time being removed from the roster. After two suspensions, a wrestler is removed for 60 days, and is outright released after a third suspension.

Gutierrez's suspension is the first offence by a member of WWE's active roster since Eddie Fatu (Umaga) failed in June 2009 for a second time. As WWE explains on it's corporate website, however, because Fatu refused to attend a rehabilitation clinic.

Though this is Mysterio's first suspension under the Wellness Policy, it isn't the first time his name has been linked to abuse of substances. In March 2007, Sports Illustrated's website conducted an interview with two of its reporters, Luis Fernando Llosa and L. Jon Wertheim, who were investigating an, "alleged illegal steroid distribution network that has implicated numerous pro athletes."

In the interview, which took place after the writers were in Jupiter, Florida alongside state and federal agents, Llosa and Wertheim stated that David Wilbirt, an Arizona doctor, had been investigated for allegedly writing prescriptions over the internet for several wrestlers, including Gutierrez, between November 2004 and April 2005. The period in question, however, was before WWE instituted the policy (February 2006).

Mysterio is the current WWE Intercontinental champion, most recently defending his title successfully against Dolph Ziggler at Summerslam this past weekend.
