Impact: Styles and Joe climb the mountain
By CHRIS & BRYAN SOKOL - SLAM! Wrestling
TNA's seventh anniversary spectacular, Slammiversary is this Sunday night. The focus of said event will be the King of the Mountain match for the TNA Heavyweight Championship. On tonight's episode of Impact, all five competitors in that bout will square off in a three-way tag team main event. Plus, Raven takes on Jethro Holliday in a Clockwork Orange match and the Knockouts do battle.
The show began with a recap of last week's episode, followed by the usual opener and intro from Mike Tenay and Don West.
Mick Foley, along with referee Earl Hebner and a clown, made his way into the Impact Zone. There was a "Welcome back Jeffery" banner in the ring. Why does every segment involving Foley throwing a party have to include a clown? Foley announced his guests for the party, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle. Foley called Jeff Jarrett to the ring, as confetti fell. Foley informed his guests that the main event for Impact would be a three-way tag team match, pitting Foley and Jarrett against the pairings of Styles/Joe and Angle/Sting. Foley asked all of them to put their hands in, but Jarrett just left. Styles and Angle joined Foley and as Joe was about to do the same, he attacked Angle.
Jeremy Borash spoke to Daffney and Raven, who promised victory later on, as well as in their mixed tag team match against Abyss and Taylor Wilde at Slammiversary. This is definitely one of the stronger angles running in TNA. Hope they don't find a way to sabotage it.
A recap was shown of what's been going on between Shane Douglas and Daniels.
Match One - Amazing Red vs. Daniels
Good X Division match here. It was announced that Daniels would be facing Shane Douglas with his roster spot on the line at Slammiversary. Amazing Red got in some offense here, but Daniels was able to put him away with a DVD followed by a BME.
Winner Via Pinfall - Daniels
After the match, Shane Douglas appeared on the TNA Tron and promised to franchise Daniels at Slammiversary. Hopefully he has a better outing then he did with AJ Styles last week.
Lauren talked to Taylor Wilde, Awesome Kong and Riesha Saeed, who made it clear that they were going to finish off Angelina Love and Daffney later on.
Mike Tenay and Don West ran down the rest of the card for Impact and hyped both King of the Mountain matches that will take place this Sunday night at Slammiversary.
Matt Morgan was in the ring and called out Sting. Morgan talked about being much stronger and smarter than Sting, but not being able to join the Main Event Mafia, because he hasn't won a World Heavyweight Championship. Morgan followed up by saying that he hasn't been given the opportunity to win one either. Morgan challenged Sting to "put his money where his mouth was," at Slammiversary and face him in a match. Sting accepted and proposed that if Morgan won the match, he could take his spot in the Mafia. When Sting turned his back, Morgan tried to attack him, but Sting stepped to the side and tossed Morgan out of the ring. I'm all for the Morgan push, but how many angles is the Mafia going in right now?
Backstage, Jeremy Borash stood by and spoke to Jeff Jarrett about Mick Foley. Jarrett said that he hasn't rid TNA of Foley yet, because he has compassion for someone who is crazy. He went on to guarantee that he was taking the TNA Heavyweight Championship home at Slammiversary. I thought Jarrett and Foley shared equal power, which would make either one getting rid of the other impossible. Oh well.
Match Two - Clockwork Organe House of Fun Match - Raven w/ Dr. Stevie and Daffney vs. Jethro Holliday
Why does TNA insist on doing so many gimmick matches on Impact. They do have pay-per-view. Brawl style match that saw Raven put Jethro Holliday through a piece of a cage and pin him on the floor.
Winner Via Pinfall - Raven
After the match, Dr. Stevie and Daffney joined in, as Raven DDT'ed Jethro Holliday on a chair. Abyss ran down and made the save.
Don West did a pre-taped interview with Samoa Joe, who said that he would reveal his adviser in due time. Joe said AJ Styles was like his brother and that the Main Event Mafia was taking opportunities away from the young guys. Joe said that at Slammiversary, his target is Kurt Angle. Something tells me Styles is walking out with the gold on Sunday.
The Beautiful People were shown walking backstage, as Angelina Love complained about not being able to trust Daffney as a partner.
Lauren interviewed Abyss, who vowed to defeat Raven and Daffney in the mixed Monster's Ball match at Slammiversary. Abyss took a bandage off Lauren's arm and revealed that she was bruised from last week's attack. Lauren left crying as Abyss promised to take care of Dr. Stevie as well. Great angle, keeps getting better.
Match Three - Awesome Kong and Taylor Wilde w/ Riesha Saeed vs. Angelina Love and Daffney w/ Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne
The Beautiful People were able to spray Riesha Saeed in the face and take her out of the mix, however Awesome Kong and Taylor Wilde got the last laugh, as a Implant Buster to Daffney was enough to secure the victory.
Winners Via Pinfall - Awesome Kong and Taylor Wilde
After the match, The Beautiful People beat on Awesome Kong with a chair, until Tara ran out and made the save. When Kong was up, her and Tara engaged in a stare down. They could have some good matches, provided they don't get lost in the shuffle, like TNA tends to do with Knockouts. Remember Sojournor Bolt as number one contender? Didn't think so.
In the backstage area, Jeremy Borash asked Team 3D what they thought about Beer Money Inc. not coming to their aid when they were being attacked by the British Invasion, after 3D helped them. Brother Ray didn't know what to think, but Brother Devon said they better have an answer before Slammiversary.
Another Cody Deaner and ODB training package was shown. I see this gimmick going down the same path as Shark Boy and Curry Man. A path to comedy squash matches.
So Cal Val spoke to Lethal Consequences and the Motor City Machine Guns, who showed some tension amongst the ranks, as Alex Shelley claimed that one of Detroit's finest would win the X Division title at Slammiversary.
So Cal Val caught up with Beer Money Inc, who said that they just won $100,000 and they had been out drinking. Team 3D came in and an argument ensued, leading to an all out brawl.
Match Four - Eight Man Tag Team Match - Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon) and Beer Money Inc. (James Storm and Robert Roode) vs. Lethal Consequences (Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed) and The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin)
Team 3D and Beer Money Inc. fought on their way to the ring. Suicide came in and beat on the Motor City Machine Guns. Team 3D eventually got in the ring, hit the 3D on Alex Shelley and got the win. Why did they have to push these two angles in a pointless eight man tag like this?
Winners Via Pinfall - Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon) and Beer Money Inc. (James Storm and Robert Roode)
Backstage, AJ Styles talked about loving competition and being happy that he had a guy like Samoa Joe watching his back. Joe stepped in and said he knew he had a hairline fracture and said that since he owed Styles, he was going to take care of things in the main event.
Mick Foley and Jeremy Borash were goofing around backstage. Foley introduced Kip James as his new lackey. Kip is entertaining, so his interactions with Foley should be interesting.
Mike Tenay and Don West ran down the card for Slammiversary.
Jeremy Borash talked to Kurt Angle, who said that Sting taught him a lot of things. Angle talked about how not being the Godfather of the Main Event Mafia has made his life less stressful. Angle said that the Mafia would be in Detroit this Sunday and that he would beat Samoa Joe and become the new TNA Heavyweight Champion.
Match Five - Three Way Tag Team Match - AJ Styles and Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle and Sting vs. Jeff Jarrett and Mick Foley
Mick Foley and Jeff Jarrett broke down as a team during the match, when Foley left the apron to do commentary, while Jarrett was in the ankle lock. Jarrett left the match and attacked Foley and his security. Back in the ring, Samoa Joe hit the Muscle Buster on Angle and covered him to get the pinfall victory.
Winners Via Pinfall - AJ Styles and Samoa Joe
After the match, AJ Styles and Samoa Joe embraced, as Kurt Angle was laid out in the ring and Mick Foley clutched his TNA Heavyweight Championship belt on the floor.
