Lashley keeps perfect record intact with quick win
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Bobby Lashley remained undefeated in his budding mixed martial arts career with a TKO win over Mike Cook on Friday night at Maximum Fighting Championships 21: Hard Knocks at the River Cree Resort & Casino in Edmonton, Alberta.
After struggling in his last fight against veteran Jason Guida in March, Lashley (3-0) dominated Friday, choking out Cook in 24 seconds with a guillotine choke.
The two swung wildly to start and Lashley grabbed what looked to be an innocent front-headlock. Instead, seconds later, referee "Big" John McCarthy pulled the former ECW Champion off the now-unconscious Cook.
"I yanked him down there and got the vice grip on him," Lashley said during his post-fight interview. "I yanked him flat and I squeezed."
Cook (6-4) was on Lashley's bad side even before the fight began. Cook wore a Lucha mask to Thursday's weigh-in, which angered Lashley.
"I choked him out and made him pay," Lashley said. "Now he can go back and put on the mask and have fun with himself."
"Everyone tries to make fun of the wrestling thing," Lashley told the Edmonton Sun. "I'm here for business."
Lashey will face a much bigger test in his next fight, as he is signed to battle 350-pound behemoth Bob "The Beast" Sapp (10-3-1) on June 27 at Fight Force International's "Ultimate Chaos" in Biloxi, Miss. Sapp, a former NFL offensive lineman, has won 5-of-6 fights, his latest win coming in Japan on New Year's Eve where he fought a fighter portraying the popular Japanese anime character Kinnikuman.
The fight will air on pay-per-view.
"I'm going with the bigger guy," Lashley said. "Keep the competition going and the fights rolling."
