Smackdown: Punk wins, but Hardy stands tall
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling

The match quality is phenomenal on tonight’s episode of Smackdown! It is a busy evening as a Fatal Four Way #1 Contender’s Match takes place, along with a United States championship battle and Edge vs. CM “Mr. Money In The Bank” Punk. From the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, in New York City lets rock n’ rolla onto the report.

A video package is shown announcing a Fatal Four Way match tonight that will determine the #1 Contender to Edge’s World Championship at Judgement Day.

Chris Jericho marches out to the ring and he starts out by saying that the scenery may have changed but that the fans are still idiots. Y2J goes on about how he is above competing in a #1 Contender’s match tonight and how he should automatically face Edge at Judgement Day. Edge’s music hits and the Rated R Superstar is in the ring. Edge is getting some cheers from the crowd as he runs down Jericho. CM Punk now interrupts and shows the clip of how he beat Edge on Raw last June to cash in his previous Money In The Bank victory. After being told off by Punk, Jericho tells the world that he is tired of being disrespected and walks out. Punk tells the champion that GM Theodore Long made a match between Edge and Punk tonight. CM tells The Rated R Superstar that after he beats Edge tonight in a non-title match he will cash in his briefcase immediately and pin Edge again for the gold!

Match 1: John Morrison vs. Shelton Benjamin

These two stellar athletes have an aggressive start before Benjamin takes control with a boot to the skull. Morrison and Benjamin’s styles mesh perfectly as each Superstar hit some high flying manoeuvres. Out of nowhere Morrison connects with the Moonlight Drive for the pinfall. Disappointing that the match was so short!

WINNER: John Morrison

Match 2: Fatal Four Way #1 Contender’s Match- Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho vs. Kane vs.

All four of these men are former world champions. Following the commercial break Jeff catches Kane leaping off the top rope with a drop kick and Rey Rey delivers a top rope leg drop right after on the Big Red Machine for a near fall. Jericho sneaks out a pin on Kane after Hardy nailed a Swanton Bomb. Kane freaks out and attacks all three of his opponents once his is eliminated. Y2J cracks Mysterio over the head with a chair and is therefore eliminated via DQ. Hardy is able to counter Mysterio’s West Coast Pop into a pin to become the #1 contender to Edge’s world title.

WINNER: Jeff Hardy

Backstage Edge and Jericho are searching for the general manager to complain about their matches.

Cryme Tyme is out and gets the New York audience all riled up. They have Layla and Eve out for a dance off where the fans cheer loudest for Eve. Layla slaps Eve afterwards and Cryme Tyme try to restrain them. *yawn*

Match 3: United States Championship- MVP (c) w/ Sherri vs. Dolph Ziggler

MVP is accompanied by Sherri from the TV show “The View”, and apparently the current U.S. champ will appear on their program this Monday. Ziggler has stepped up his intensity as both wrestlers look to be blending well together. Ziggler tries to kiss Sherri who slaps him before he gets the chance. This allows MVP to recover and connect with a couple of clotheslines and The Play Maker to retain his title. Sherri and the champion celebrate in the ring after the bell.

WINNER: MVP

In the back Chris Jericho was screaming at GM Long about being disqualified when John Morrison walks by. Morrison calls Y2J a loser and the two have to be pulled apart. CM Punk strolls between them with a smirk.

Match 4: Main Event- Non-title: Edge (c) vs. CM Punk

Earlier in the night Punk proclaimed that he would beat Edge and then cash in his briefcase to take the heavyweight gold. Following the commercial break the world champ is back in control thanks to a knee to the gut and some hard shots to the back. Punk turns the tide with his educated Muay Thai feet. Edge slaps on a Sharpshooter, however, the challenger is eventually able to reach the bottom rope. Punk hits the Go To Sleep for the win. He then gets ready to cash in his Money In The Bank briefcase when out of the crowd comes Umaga who blindsides him with the Samoan Spike. Edge was about to go after CM with the briefcase, but Jeff Hardy rushed in for the save. After hitting a Swanton Bomb on The Rated R Superstar the program ends with Hardy standing over the fallen champion.

WINNER: CM Punk
