ECW: Swagger leaves Christian laying
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: Christian came out on top of the Elimination Chase to Backlash by defeating Finlay on Thursday on Superstars. Tonight, Christian makes his ECW Championship match official with a contract signing with Jack Swagger. Should be a good one!
And we are TAPED! from London, England. Josh Mathews and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Finlay and Hornswaggle make their way to the ring. Striker says Finlay has an important announcement to make. Finlay reminds us this is Hornswaggle's last night on ECW. He gives Hornswaggle the mic and Hornswaggle says he wants to wrestle tonight on ECW. Hornswaggle is in the midst of saying goodbye when Tyson Kidd and Natalya make their way to the ring.
Naturally, Kidd makes fun of Hornswaggle. Finlay gets back at them by calling them Teletubbies. Natalya brings the family heritage to the forefront and then when Hornswaggle pinches her butt, they head out of the ring and Natalya challenges him to a match. We'll find out if it's going to happen after this...
Match #1 - Hornswaggle (Belfast, Northern Ireland) vs. Natalya (Calgary, Alberta)
Mathews tells us that during the break, Interim ECW General Manager Tiffany came out and made the match official.
Natalya challenges him to a test of strength, but Hornswaggle catch reach high enough. They do this about three times and then Natalya slaps him.
Hornswaggle gets back at her by attacking her bum again. Hornswaggle goes off the ropes and spears her for two. Kidd hops up on the apron, but Hornswaggle takes his jacket off and throws it at her. Finlay comes by and pulls Kidd off the apron. Both combatants go to look, with Natalya throwing Hornswaggle back. With Natalya distracted, Hornswaggle rolls her up for the fall.
Winner via pinfall: Hornswaggle
We're back and Kidd and Natalya are in Tiffany's office. They are not happy. Natalya wants Hornswaggle fired. No dice, Tiffany says. Instead, she announces a tag team match for Superstars -- Kidd and Natalya vs. Finlay and Hornswaggle.
Match #2 - Evan Bourne (St. Louis, MO) vs. Paul Burchill (Chelsea, England)
Bourne goes to the top but is distracted by Katie Lea, allowing Burchill to launch him off the top. Burchill lands a nasty knee to the body for two. Burchill locks in a Dragon Sleeper but Burchill relents. He works a chinlock complete with knee on back. He transitions into a butterfly suplex. Bourne goes to the other corner where Burchill hits a double flying knee.
Burchill is just going to work here, beating Bourne from pillar to post. Burchill goes back to the chinlock with knee in back. Burchill turns that into a rear-naked choke and back into the chinlock with knee in back. Bourne slips out the backdoor but is quickly put back down with a back-body drop. But Bourne continues to fight, putting Burchill down with some kicks.
Bourne ducks a clothesline and lands a huge knee that sends Burchill out of the ring. Burchill comes back and eats another kick. Bourne goes for another fancy move but Burchill just grabs him and drives him to the mat.
Burchill goes for the running knees again but Bourne moves and rolls him up for two. He goes to the top for the Shooting Star Press, but Burchill is too quick, knocking him down. Bourne ends up on Burchill's shoulders and rolls out, sending Burchill to the mat hard. Bourne lines him up and then lands another perfect Shooting Star Press for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Evan Bourne
We now get a promo for Kozlov showing him roundhouse kicking glass bottles, punching bottles. Oh great, he's next.
Match #3 - Vladimir Kozlov (Moscow, Russia) vs. Frankie Sloan (London, England)
Kozlov cuts a promo of which I understand about four words of. I don't think I missed much.
Sloan is game, but Kozlov is just too much, too powerful. It's over quickly.
Winner via pinfall: Vladimir Kozlov
Tiffany is in the ring to mediate our contract signing. She welcomes both wrestlers (or is it superstars? Or sports entertainers? I can never keep up!). Swagger continues his trend of wearing suits. I approve of this. Tiffany tells them to be seated.
Christian signs and hands it to Swagger. Swagger picks up the mic and runs down the all-business Christian about not having any witty one-liners making fun of his expensive suit or the way he talks. Swagger then signs and starts talking again.
Swagger says since Christian was gone, a new class of WWE superstars has emerged -- a list he's at the top of. Swagger says he can tell that Christian realizes that Swagger is bigger, faster, stronger than he is. Swagger says Christian realizes he can't win and that's why he has nothing to say.
Swagger's about to get up and leave when Christian picks up the mic. Christian makes fun of his suit (the same one he wore to his high school graduation, Christian asserts), haircut and speech. But he says, at the end of the day, what's it going to do for him? What does it mean? It doesn't mean anything, he says. Christian says he's focused on making Swagger the biggest, fastest and strongest ex-ECW Champion in history.
Swagger holds the belt up in Christian's face and then throws it at him. This sparks a brief brawl which sees Swagger lay Christian out with the gut-wrench powerbomb through the table.
