Smackdown: Legacy ends The Game
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
Only 29 days to WrestleMania and we see the Money In The Bank match continue to form as there are two more qualifying matches this evening. Triple H will also be in action, but the real question is whether Randy Orton and Legacy will get involved. Well let's roll the dice as Smackdown comes to you from the Mohegan Sun Casino!
The Undertaker opens the show by walking to the ring and stating how it angers him how now he is being hunted instead of doing the hunting. It is because of his WrestleMania streak and he is angered that Shawn Michaels wants to feed his own ego by trying to end it. A HBK video montage of his Mania moments is then shown. Taker gives Michaels his due, but says that his fate will be no different then all the rest before him and that “it will be hell trying to get to heaven.” I hope the WWE staff does not have HBK defeat Undertaker and leave that right for an up and comer at some point who really needs the rub.
Jeff Hardy enters Vickie Guerrero’s office and he still refuses to fight his brother in a match. Jeff said that he will qualify for Money in the Bank tonight.
Match 1: Money in the Bank Qualifier- Matt Hardy vs. MVP
Matt grabs the mic before things start and tells the world that his brother can’t run from him. He states that once they both qualify for Money in the Bank then he will finally get his hands on Jeff at WrestleMania. Hardy is drawing a lot of heat, and cuts a strong promo. Now onto the match. The former tag team partners lock up with MVP doing some chain wrestling early on. Following the commercials Matt Hardy is focusing on the neck with a side headlock and various other neck wrenching manoeuvres. Following a Side Effect, Hardy goes for the Twist of Fate, however, MVP is able to reverse it for a roll up and the win to qualify.
Match 2: Non-title- Maryse (c) vs. Eve
Michelle McCool joins the broadcast team of J.R. and Tazz for this one. Although Maryse has improved quite a bit it is clear she not ready to carry the inexperienced Eve. Everything looks awkward and forced (except for a couple of nice single leg drop kicks by Eve) with the finish mercifully coming with Maryse’s wicked hair flip DDT. After the bell Melina rushes the ring and Lou Thesz presses Maryse. Michelle blind sides Melina and takes her down quickly.
WrestleMania contract signing time for the World Heavyweight Championship match between Edge and The Big Show. Edge does not have the title with him and refuses to sign anything before his wife tells him exactly what is going on between her and the giant. Vickie assures her husband that her relationship with Show is strictly professional. Big Show tells The Rated R Superstar that he is not a strong champion and surprisingly GM Guerrero agrees. The two bicker back and forth. John Cena puts a stop to the signing by rocking Show with a low blow and chucking Edge into a ring post. Cena then whispers into Vickie’s ear, which causes her to start crying.
Match 3: Money in the Bank Qualifier – Jeff Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin
Benjamin starts off quickly as he connects with a couple of suplexes for a near fall. Hardy is thrown to the outside and his back skips across the mat like a rock on a pond. Following the commercials The Gold Standard has the Rainbow Warrior in a chin lock and keeps full control with a back breaker. Jeff finally puts in some offense as he connects with a between the legs leg drop and Whisper in the Wind. Hardy then notices his brother Matt standing on the apron. Jeff nails the Twist of Fate, but then Matt enters the ring and punches Benjamin causing the DQ in Shelton’s favour. Matt glares at his brother with pure disdain and turns his back awaiting an attack. Jeff does nothing and Matt walks away without incident.
WINNER: Shelton Benjamin
Match 4: Main Event- Non-title: Triple H (c) vs. Umaga
Triple H comes out with thunderous right hands and is manhandling the Samoan Bulldozer. A side kick to the face turns things to Umaga’s favour and uses his head to get a two count. As Triple H begins to regain control Legacy appears outside the ring. Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes swarm The Game. Despite a valiant effort the numbers game eventually catches up to the WWE champion and he is given a severe beatdown both in and out of the ring. Orton contemplates going for the head punt, however, he decides better of it and simply glares at his fallen foe. What a terrific build for this Triple H vs. Randy Orton feud.
WINNER: No Contest
