Smackdown: Edge dominates thanks to some brotherly love
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
The Road to WrestleMania is in full swing as Smackdown rolls into Portland, Oregon tonight. Jim Ross has a huge one-on-one interview with Triple H where he will respond to Randy Orton’s attacks on the McMahon family. The new World Heavyweight Champion, Edge, expected a celebration and instead received a confrontation courtesy of one Jeff Hardy. There is plenty of action this evening so let's get to the report!
A recap of Edge’s losing the WWE title and then winning the World Heavyweight Championship at No Way Out is shown. The Rated R Superstar makes his way to the ring, insults the crowd and puts himself over as the first Superstar to ever compete in two Elimination Chamber matches in the same night. Just when Edge has wrapped up a serpent face painted Jeff Hardy walks out. The Enigma ... or whatever you want to call him, challenges Edge for the belt this evening. The champ actually asks Hardy if he has been “taking illegal substances again," and says Jeff doesn’t deserve it. Hardy mocks Edge by stating that he is Vickie Guerrero’s puppet and when The Rated R Superstar goes to attack, Jeff delivers a Twist of Fate.
Kizarny is in GM Guerrero’s office speaking nonsense until Edge storms in furious and kicks him out. Vickie makes the match of Edge vs. Hardy a non-title match tonight.
Match 1: Michelle McCool & Maryse vs. Eve Torres & Maria
Michelle and Maria lock up first with McCool coming out of the gate strong with a couple of punches and European uppercuts. Michelle is looking technically sound this evening and eventually tags in her reluctant partner Maryse who continues the beatdown of Maria. Eve receives the hot tag and scores a near fall on a follow through vertical suplex. While the referee is distracted, McCool kicks Eve off the top rope allowing Maryse to pin her. The blondes take home the win!
WINNERS: Maryse & Michelle McCool
A clip is shown of Miz and Morrison’s double date with the Bella Twins is shown. Carlito and Primo disguise themselves as waiters and end up pieing the lovely twins after aiming for Miz and Morrison. This was actually a pretty funny segment. It is announced that next week Carlito and Primo’s WWE Tag Team championships will be on the line, giving Miz and Morrison the chance to become undisputed tag team champs.
Match 2: R Truth & MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin & Chavo Guerrero
Before the bell even rings R Truth is attacked by Benjamin and Guerrero, putting him out of commission. Despite this becoming a handicap match, MVP is on fire and dominating both his opponents. This is a crisp momentum shifting match, but the real story comes when Chavo turns on Shelton! Chavo hits a frog splash on his partner and this allows MVP to connect with The Drive By on Benjamin for the 1-2-3.
WINNERS: MVP & R Truth
It is time for Jim Ross’s one-on-one interview with Triple H to address Randy Orton’s attacks on Stephanie, Shane, and Vince McMahon. The Game is in a controlled fury as he admits to being married to Stephanie and tells Orton that he has “crossed a line that he cannot come back from." He storms out to end the short sit down interview.
Match 3: Umaga vs. Scotty Goldman
Smackdown is, of course, taped earlier in the week so it is interesting in that WWE actually released Scotty Goldman earlier today. I would expect that Scotty (better known as Colt Cabana) will be back in Ring of Honor relatively soon. This is a straight up squash ... nice knowing ya Scotty.
GM Vickie Guerrero is in the ring and receiving incredible heat. The crowd is so loud it drowns her out. She is appalled that Shawn Michaels and JBL are assuming one of them will face Undertaker at WrestleMania when Taker is on her show. Vladimir Kozlov is introduced and it will be him facing the winner of JBL vs. HBK to determine who will in fact take on The Dead Man at WM 25. I really hope it’s not Kozlov!
Match 4: Main Event- Non-title: Edge (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
Jeff makes Edge look foolish with a trio of arm drags, before the champion sucker punches his foe in the corner. Hardy’s face paint looks really creepy. Back from the commercial break the Rated R Superstar is in full control and becoming increasingly frustrated, as he cannot pin Hardy. Edge is able to counter a Twist of Fate into an Edge o’ Matic, however, he can still not keep the Charismatic Enigma down. Hardy counters a spear into a small package, hits the Twist of Fate, and follows that with the Swanton Bomb. Brother Matt bursts onto the scene and connects with a Twist of Fate on Jeff to cause the disqualification. Matt grabs the mic and tells his brother that they will be battling one another next week on Smackdown. As Jeff gets to his feet Edge comes out of nowhere with a nasty spear. The show ends with a triumphant Rated R Superstar standing proudly.
WINNER: Jeff Hardy by DQ
