ECW: Finlay's title chase begins
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: Finlay left ECW Champion Jack Swagger laying in the ring last week. What will happen this time around when the two meet in a non-title match in the main event? Will Finlay hand Swagger his first televised singles loss? Should be a good one!

And we are TAPED! from St. Louis, MO. 2008 Slammy Award winners for "Announce Team of the Year" Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).

Match #1 - Paul Burchill (Chelsea, England) vs. Tommy Dreamer (Yonkers, N.Y.)

Wow, looks like Tommy is actually going to get a win.

Dreamer tries to catch him with a quick roll-up, but to no avail. A "Let's Go, Dreamer" chant fires up early. Dreamer hits a series of arm drags and goes for a bulldog but Burchill sends him throat-first into the middle rope.

Burchill works a chinlock and kicks Dreamer in the corner. He takes a charge at him, but Dreamer moves. Dreamer sets Burchill up in the Tree of Woe and hits the dropkick. He goes for the DDT, but Burchill throws him into the turnbuckle and rolls him up for two. Dreamer loads him up for the Death Valley Driver, but Burchill elbows his way out and hits a neckbreaker for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Paul Burchill

ECW General Manager Theodore Long is walking backstage when he runs into Jamie Noble, who says he's here to save the show. He says everyone knows that he is the big dog over on Raw, so here's here to lend his services to ECW in the absence of Matt Hardy. Long says he'll take him up on his offer.

John Morrison and The Miz make their way to the ring with Dreamer still recovering.

We're back and Morrison is addressing Dreamer. He says Dreamer is so slow he can't even get out of the ring in time for the next segment to start. They pretty much rip him in every conceivable fashion, including several fat jokes ("Fatty Dreamer"). The line that sets Dreamer off is one about his wife and kids only wanting to see him less than the audience. He attacks Miz and, well, it doesn't end well. Morrison pulls Dreamer off and holds him up for the Reality Check. Be jealous.

Match #2 - Jamie Noble (Hanover, W.V.) vs The Boogeyman (The Bottomless Pit)

Noble gets a few seconds of offense which Boogey largely no-sells. When Boogey gets out of a chinlock, he hits a few clotheslines, a Stinger splash and the pump-handle slam for the win. Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Winner via pinfall: The Boogeyman

Match #3 - Jack Swagger (Perry, Okla.) vs. Finlay (Belfast, Northern Ireland)

Grisham reminds us that Swagger has never lost in singles competition (not on TV, anyway).

Swagger uses his amateur wrestling background to keep Finlay on the mat, but Finlay gets out and slaps him, frustrating the young champion. Swagger works a hammerlock and shoots a single leg but Finlay sprawls to avoid the takedown. Swagger comes charging in and Finlay hits a single and takes Swagger down and into a modified Indian Death Lock. They go into the corner together and collide heads. After a few moments, Finlay goes for a backslide, but Swagger gets right out. Finlay bull rushes him and sends him outside. Swagger slaps the innocent barricade in disgust.

We're back and Finlay is firmly in control, but Swagger whips Finlay into the corner and he goes armpit-first into the middle turnbuckle. Finlay rolls to the outside to take a moment and Swagger comes out and hits him and lifts him back-first into the apron. He rolls him into the ring and covers for two. Swagger hits a back suplex for two and then puts Finlay in a body scissor.

Swagger hits a huge back elbow to Finlay's grill and then a big boot. This draws Hornswaggle out from under the ring. Swagger goes after him but misses. He turns around right into a reverse atomic drop and gets clotheslined out of the ring, but Swagger turns the table and again lifts Finlay into the ring apron and into the ring post. He picks up the Shillelagh and throws it all the way up the ramp, but when Swagger goes to re-enter the ring, Hornswaggle comes out from under the ring with a super sized Shillelagh and cracks Swagger in the ankle with it. Finlay hits a clothesline and follows it up with the Celtic Cross.

Winner via pinfall: Finlay
