Smackdown: Hardy blows up!
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
Jeff Hardy will be Edge’s guest on his Cutting Edge interview segment to discuss Hardy’s hit and run accident, along with their WWE title match at the Royal Rumble. Triple H will also be in attendance, but what shape will The Game be in after being knocked out by the Big Show last week? Another Last Man Standing match is on tap as is the retirement of a former women’s champion. From Omaha, Nebraska lets get to another edition of Smackdown!
General Manager Vickie Guerrero kicks off the show in the ring by displaying the video of Triple H’s three matches last week. The Game interrupts the GM’s boasting and initially apologizes for making fun of her. Triple H wants to bury the hatchet and gives Vickie back the nude photos. Guerrero states that this isn’t good enough and tells The Game that his Royal Rumble spot is on the line against the Big Show tonight in a Last Man Standing Match. HHH said he thought this might happen so he puts blocked out pictures of the GM’s naked photos up on the Titan Tron. An infuriated Vickie changes her mind on the match and says that MVP will fight for Triple H and if he cannot beat Show then the giant gets his spot.
Match 1: Jack Swagger & Mark Henry w/ Tony Atlas vs. Finlay w/ Hornswaggle & Matt Hardy
Mark Henry begins against the now former ECW champion Matt Hardy. Matt outsmarts the World’s Strongest Man with an ensiguri and then tags out to Finlay. The new ECW title holder does not fair any better then his teammate as the Irishman whips him all over the squared circle. Returning from the commercial break has Henry and Swagger wearing down Finlay. Hardy finally receives the hot tag and lays into Swagger with a bulldog for a near fall. A distraction from Tony Atlas doesn’t do much as Matt is able to hit the Twist of Fate on Swagger to win the match for his team.WINNERS: Matt Hardy & Finlay
Vickie, Edge, Chavo and Big Show are in the GM’s office with Show guaranteeing a win this evening, then at the Royal Rumble.
Match 2: R Truth vs. The Brian Kendrick w/ Ezekial Jackson
I really wish they would put the push back on Kendrick as he has so much potential to go to that next level. These two high flyers exchange some modified camel clutches to start off slow. Kendrick can’t follow through with The Kendrick, and falls for the three count after a scissors kick. Jackson comes to the aid of his man after the bell and delivers a hard slam to R Truth.
WINNER: R Truth
Back in the locker room Triple H is reminding MVP how important a win is tonight against the Big Show by holding his trusty sledgehammer.
Match 3: Last Man Standing- Big Show vs. MVP
If MVP does not win this match then Big Show takes Triple H’s spot in the Royal Rumble. MVP attacks Show from behind with a chair as he was walking down the ramp and too an early advantage. The giant’s power soon takes over and he clubs away on the struggling Superstar in and out of the ring. Following the commercials Big Show is back in full control and has MVP down for several long counts. The former U.S. champion is showing tons of heart as he refuses to stay down and fights gamely against the big man. Big Show was about to chokeslam MVP off the stage when Triple H cracks him with a sledgehammer from behind. MVP barely rises at nine, winning the battle and securing The Game his Royal Rumble placement.
Match 4: Michelle McCool vs. Victoria
It is announced that this will be Victoria’s retirement match. Victoria goes right after Michelle to get revenge on the cheap shot McCool gave her last week when they were partners. Victoria gets a 2 count after a superplex, but misses a beautiful top rope moonsault. Michelle begins to heavily focus on her fellow Diva’s left leg with several submission holds and kicks. This is a nice technically sound match thus far, and shows signs of classic Diva battles from years past. McCool hits her finisher (similar to the Styles Clash) for the three count. Victoria was one of the few solid performers in the women’s division and it is a shame to see her go.
WINNER: Michelle McCool
Vickie Guerrero informs Triple H in her office that he will be facing the undefeated Vladimir Kozlov next week *yawn*.
It is time for The Cutting Edge, with your host…Edge! The Rated R Superstar says that he has been focused solely on regaining his WWE title from Jeff Hardy. Edge continues that there have been many distractions trying to derail him from his quest and that he is happy that Jeff is in good health (from the hit and run accident) so he can get back the gold. He shows a Rated R preview of a “movie” that essentially proclaims Jeff as a fluke and that the conclusion of this “movie” will be him ending the fairytale title reign of Hardy. As the WWE champion makes his entrance something goes wrong with the pyro and fireworks blow up in Hardy’s face. Shane Helms, R Truth and crew members immediately attend to Hardy and load him onto a stretcher.
