ECW: The great protector
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas makes his long-awaited return to the squared circle as he teams with Mark Henry to take on Finlay and Hornswaggle in what is essentially a handicap match. Also, the Boogeyman returns and steals a spot on the show from DJ Gabriel and Alicia Fox. Should be a good one!

And we are "LIVE!" from Bridgeport, Conn. 2008 Slammy Award Winners for "Announce Team of the Year" Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).

A well deserved Slammy Award for Grisham and Striker, if you ask me.

We're go straight to the ring where ECW Original Tommy Dreamer has a microphone. He says that, for more than 15 years, ECW has been his life. Before he gets too far into what appears to be a sappy, potential retirement speech, Vladimir Kozlov busts in from out of nowhere and beats him up. He gets the mic and challenges Matt Hardy to a match before laying out Dreamer again. He gets on the stick again and tells Hardy "this is your future" pointing to Dreamer. He then exits through the crowd.

Now Jack Swagger's music hits and he heads to the ring to presumably add insult to injury. Swagger does just that, hitting the Swagger Bomb (I'm going to start calling it that) on Dreamer before celebrating in the ring.

Match #1 - Jimmy Wang Yang (Austell, Ga.) & Kung Fu Naki (Japan) vs. "Two-Time Slammy Award Winners" John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) & The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio)

A close match throughout the early going. Funaki sends Morrison through the ropes with a kick and tries to go to the outside to follow-up, but is distracted by The Miz (HOO-RAH!). This allows Morrison to pull him off the ropes, sending the advantage the other way.

We're back and Miz have Funaki locked in a chinlock, keeping him away from Yang. They work some double-team moves, including a catapult into a punch and an elbow from Miz. Morrison hits a big knee to the face for two and then chokes Funaki with his own Gi. Funaki gets up, but Morrison takes him right back down and works an armbar. Funaki gets up and gets a roll-up for two and then pushes Morrison away and is able to get to his corner to Yang, who is the proverbial house of fire upon his entrance. He flings Morrison across the ring and gets a two count. Funaki and Miz battle it out on the outside. Morrison goes for the Moonlight Drive, but it's countered. Yang goes for the moonsault, but Morrison moves out of the way and hits the springboard kick for the win.

Winners via pinfall: John Morrison & The Miz

Tony Atlas is backstage and asks Mark Henry how he looks in his old-school Red, White & Blue trunks. Henry says he doesn't care about him. And why isn't his bag by his locker? Atlas says he is sorry.

The announce team has just been informed that at Armageddon, Matt Hardy will face Vladimir Kozlov.

Match #2 - Boogeyman (The Bottomless Pit) vs. Scott Reid (Weighing 195 lbs.)

Boogey ragdolls Reid all over the ring and hits the big slam for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Boogeyman

Ol' Scott gets the worms after the match. And then they go WCW with showing part of Boogey's entrance during the post-match replay.

Finlay is backstage with Hornswaggle. He tells him to listen to everything he says carefull and they'll be OK.

Match #3 - Mark Henry (Silsbee, Texas) & Tony Atlas (Roanoke, Va.) vs. Finlay & Hornswaggle (Belfast, Northern Ireland)

Finlay and Atlas, the Hall of Famer, start it out. Atlas still looks quick on his feet, actually. They lock-up and Atlas shoves Finlay to the ground. A lot of stalling early on, as this match started with 15 minutes still left in the show. Atlas works a side-headlock and they are really selling Tony's power here. Finlay finally gets the table to turn and hits the atomic butt-drop on Atlas and Hornswaggle hits the Tadpole Splash. Finlay taunts Henry, which brings him in. He hits Finlay and sends him out of the ring. He then violently shoves Hornswaggle to the ground and then goes up for a Vader Bomb, but Finlay pulls him out of the ring just in time.

We're back and it's Finlay and Henry with Finlay working some strikes before running right into a powerslam.

Henry puts Finlay in a very large chinlock and is really working him over here. Finlay hits a jawbreaker and moves out of the way of a splash and hits a DDT, but only for two. Henry, out of nowhere, pulls Hornswaggle into the ring and slams him to the mat. He then goes for the World's Strongest Splash, but Finlay pushes Hornswaggle out of the way and eats the splash. Henry follows up with the World's Strongest Slam and that's all she wrote.

Winners via pinfall: Mark Henry & Tony Atlas
