ECW: Leftovers battle to face Hardy
MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: With my man-crush Evan Bourne on injured reserve, the Cyber Sunday leftovers, Finlay and Mark Henry, will battle it out to see who gets the next crack at ECW Champion Matt Hardy. Should be a good one!
Well, it's Election Night in America (it really needs a snazzy theme, a la HNIC's new theme), so I doubt anyone's even watching ECW this week, so that makes my job extra special today. In fact, as I type this, the race has been called for about two hours and both candidates have made their speeches. With that being said, I'm sure, like always, there's some good things on tap in the Land of Extreme tonight to cheer up all the supporters of Sen. McCain.
And we are "LIVE!" from Orlando, Fla., Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Match #1 - Matt Hardy (Cameron, N.C.) vs. Bam Neely (Robbinsdale, Minn.)
Neely gets off to a quick start in this edition of "Foregone Conclusion Theatre." He's "moving with purpose" according to Striker. Neely throws Hardy into the corner, but gets too cocky and eats a back elbow. Hardy goes to the second rope, but it caught by Neely who hits a Bossman slam. Neely tries to follow up with a suplex, but Hardy counters with a reverse neckbreaker and a swinging neckbreaker. He tries the second rope again and hits the elbow to the neck and the Side Effect for two.
Hardy grabs a headlock, but Neely pushes him into the corner. Neely charges, but eats a boot. Hardy follows up with a Tornado DDT from the second rope but Neely kicks out at two.
Hardy goes to the top rope but Neely hits him and lands a Superplex, but Hardy kicks out at 2.85. Neely picks Hardy up and tries to drive him into the corner, but Hardy's feet hit the turnbuckle, throwing Neely off and allowing Hardy to hit the Twist of Fate for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Matt Hardy
Hardy's celebrating the victory in what was a pretty solid match when Finlay's music hits.
We're back and Finlay has a mic and he's looking for a shot at the ECW Championship. Hardy says he knew this day would come and is looking for war (insert Mark Henry's music at this exact point). Henry says he's not allowing this to happen like this. He says there's no way he's letting Finlay have his title shot. He deserves it. Finlay interrupts and says nobody wants to see him get another shot and if they did, he would've had more than four votes at Cyber Sunday (with two of them coming from Henry and Tony Atlas). Henry says Finlay talks real tough for a man who's never beaten him. They jabber some more when ECW General Manager Theodore Long hits the scene. He declares that Hardy will defend the ECW Championship next week against the winner of tonight's main event -- Mark Henry vs. Finlay. Holla!
Match #2 - Ricky Ortiz (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) vs. Jon Davis (Parts Unheard)
Ortiz gives his Ricky O Rally Towel to a young fan at ringside. Striker informs us Mr. Davis was trained by Dory Funk Jr.
Ortiz hits a flying shoulderblock to the tune of a "Let's Go Davis" chant and hits The Big O for the fall.
Winner via pinfall: Ricky Ortiz
"The All-American American" Jack Swagger is on his way to the ring, which is adorned by relics of Tommy Dreamer's career, including a table, trash can, kendo stick and the like.
Swagger goes over Dreamer's career (guy in crowd: "You're making me sleepy!"), including his ECW Championship run (he has the old belt) and he dumps the belt into the trash can. He then pulls a photo of Beulah off the table. He wants to know how Beulah feels about her husband being past his prime (if he had one). He says Dreamer's kids will probably grow up to be like their father -- a failure. But there's hope. They can find a role model like Swagger. He'll let them look up to him because if they don't, they'll end up working at some fast food restaurant dating the manager. This brings out Dreamer, who hits Swagger with the trash can and a shot with the kendo stick that sends Swagger out of the ring. Swagger retreats.
Match #3 - ECW Championship #1 Contender Match - Finlay (Belfast, Northern Ireland) vs. Mark Henry (Silsbee, Texas)
Finlay moves around like Anderson Silva at the start of the match, working punches and the like. Henry, though, takes advantage and works on Finlay's left arm.
We're back and Henry is firmly in control. Henry then can't remember which arm he was working on, as he moves onto the other one while Finlay keeps selling the same one after.
Henry throws Finlay shoulder first into the ring post and gets a two count. Finlay tries to fire up but a shoulderblock sends him right back to the mat. Henry goes for a Bonzai Drop but misses. Finlay goes to work but is sent to the outside. Tony Atlas stalks Finlay, but Finlay turns around and decks him. With the referee looking at Atlas, Hornswaggle goes to the top rope and is caught by Henry. Finlay quickly kicks out Henry's knee and gets a two count. Henry sends Finlay to the outside and stalks Hornswaggle, who escapes the ring and runs around it. He runs near Finlay, who tries to leap at Henry but is caught and quickly has his back almost become part of the ring post. Henry continues his pursuit of Hornswaggle, catching him and throwing him into the ring.
Finlay's down in the ring and Hornswaggle leans up against him in fear. Henry comes off the ropes looking for the big splash, but they both move. The referee throws Hornswaggle out of the ring, allowing Finlay to crack Henry with the Shillelagh for the cover.
Winner via pinfall: Finlay
