ECW: Miz and Morrison tango
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: Partners face off. And we are TAPED! from Columbus, Ohio. "Good ol' JR" Jim Ross and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V). Should be a good one!
Minus the usual pomp and pagentry, John Morrison and The Miz are out and they each have a mic. Miz says he was dominating Evan Bourne last week until Bourne's BFF, Ricky Ortiz, changed the tide. Morrison notes how Ortiz's nappy hair is disgusting. ("A grown man who gets his hair cut like a poodle!")
They then start to begrudge ECW General Manager Theodore Long for not showcasing them correctly. Of course, Long comes out to answer. Long talks about the success of the New Superstar Initiative. Morrison, in a Triple H moment, brings up Braden Walker. Long says not every hit is going to be a home run. Long says if Morrison and Miz have a problem with the competition, they can get out of his ring and get to steppin'.
Morrison and Miz want to face Ortiz and Bourne, but Long says Bourne isn't in the building tonight. They say the still want to compete when Ortiz interrupts the proceedings. Ortiz challenges one of them, it doesn't matter who. They each say they can beat anyone. So Long books them in a match against each other with the winner facing Ortiz immediately after. Holla, holla, holla.
Long is backstage with Ortiz and in comes Tiffany and she and Ortiz obviously have something going.
Match #1 - Finlay (Belfast, Northern Ireland) vs. Bam Neely (Robbinsdale, Minn.)
Bam Neely has his own music!
Finlay is all over Neely in the early going but the battle goes outside and Finlay ends up finding himself on the business end of Neely's boot and the steel steps. Neely catches Finlay and applies the Boston Crab, but Neely lets go when he sees Hornswaggle trying to slip the Shelleigh to Finlay. Of course, once he throws Hornswaggle to the ground, Finlay cracks him with the international object for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Finlay
Match #2 - Special Attraction - Maryse (Montreal, Quebec) vs. Michelle McCool (Palatka, Fla.)
Maryse locks in a modified camel clutch that JR notes "looks nothing like the Iron Sheik." Hardy har har. Maryse throws McCool face-first into the second turnbuckle. McCool comes out with a clothesline and dropkick followed by a running neckbreaker.
Maryse comes back and throws McCool from the top rope and hits a DDT for the fall.
Winner via pinfall: Maryse
Mark Henry is out with a microphone and yammers out about Matt Hardy not pinning him in the Championship Scramble. Blah blah blah. At least this interview was a good excuse to hear his music twice.
Match #3 - Mike Knox (Phoenix, Ariz.) vs. Chase Stevens (Nashville, Tenn.)
Knox hit a dropkick last week. I'm hoping for a moonsault this week.
Standard squash. Knox brutalizes him.
Winner via pinfall: Mike Knox
Jack Swagger makes his way to the ring and beats up Stevens some more. Tommy Dreamer makes the save and eats a Doctor Bomb for good measure.
Match #4 - The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio) vs. John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.)
They tie up continually and Miz works a wrist-lock. This is a straight wrestling match. Morrison and Miz fall through the ropes and to the outside.
Back in the ring and it's a wrestling match once again. That ends when Miz hits a kick and hits his running corner clothesline. Miz works a Level-2 Randy Orton Chinlock but Morrison gets out.
Miz gets Morrison to the top rope but in the transition, both end up falling hard to the mat and that's it. The ref counts them out.
This match is a no contest.
So Ortiz won't be able to face either, so instead he comes down and hits The Big O on both Miz and Morrison and that's all she wrote.
