Killer was a gentle giant
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Edward Walter Spulnik was deeply religious, a supporter of charities ... nothing like the Killer he was made out to be.

But Spulnik, who died a week ago at the age of 81, will also be remembered as legendary giant Killer Kowalski, a villain of all villains who gained notoriety in the wrestling business when it wasn't viewed as phony.

Kowalski loved talking about how he ripped off part of Yukon Eric's ear in 1952 with a knee drop in Montreal.

"I went to get paid," said Kowalski. "They asked me to go to the hospital and apologize. Yukon Eric was sitting on the edge of the bed with bandages around his head. All I could think of was, 'Humpty-Dumpty sat on the wall. Humpty-Dumpty had a great fall.' He looked up and smiled. I started to laugh.

"The only thing the reporters outside could hear was my laughter. The newspapers were filled with stories of me laughing at the sight of Yukon Eric's missing ear. When I walked to the ring the next week, people were throwing bottles at me. 'You're nothing but a killer!' someone screamed. From that moment on, I was Killer Kowalski."

Raised in Windsor, Kowalski polished off opponents with "the claw."

Truth be known, the "bad guy" was a vegetarian who loved classical music. He had a heart attack and was taken off life support Aug. 18.
