U.S. not on Petey's eh list
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
The man they call Maple Leaf Muscle is Canadian through and through.
Petey Williams, the TNA X Division champ, is happy to be part of the No Surrender pay-per-view Sept. 14 just in Oshawa.
Truth be known, Williams is happy to be coming home as a heel, even though he may get a bit of a different reaction on his home turf.
"Being a fan favourite was something I wasn't comfortable with," he says. "I was embracing the U.S. like I was Captain America.
"I grew up in Windsor, right across from Detroit. All the underage Americans would come over to our bars. I grew up disliking Americans.
"Canadian fans are different than American fans. You do some posing and be a fan favourite in the U.S., but if you're a crappy wrestler, you're done in Canada."
Williams will have friends and family watching, including his dad Petey II, who worked on the line for Chrysler.
"He'll be there. He's got nothing better to do," jokes the son.
"I'm kind of the black sheep of the family. I went to school for policing, graduated tops in my class ... then got into wrestling."
Williams underwent a bit of a makeover in recent months, suddenly looking very much like Scott Steiner.
"I needed to revamp my look," says Williams. "Alex Shelley came up with the character Maple Leaf Muscle."
A series of events alongside Steiner led to Williams being asked: "Why don't you dye your hair blond?"
Williams' response: "Why don't I dye my goatee blond, too? Why don't we go the whole nine yards with this?"
