ECW: Henry and Hardy tangle again
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: After a less than satisfying disqualification ending to their title match at SummerSlam, Mark Henry and Matt Hardy meet once again for the ECW Championship. Will Tony Atlas be a factor once again? Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from one of the Quad Cities -- Moline, Ill. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
Match #1 - John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.), The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio) & Chavo Guerrero (El Paso, Texas) vs. Evan Bourne (St. Louis, MO), Super Crazy (Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico) & Tommy Dreamer
Grisham astutely notes that there are three former ECW champions in this match.
It's actually nice to see Super Crazy, a fresh face, in the ECW ring.
Bam Neely makes his presence felt early, tripping Bourne and turning the tide in favor of the heels, who immediately isolate him in their corner.
It's not until Dreamer gets in the fray that things turn around, as Dreamer cleans house on Morrison and Miz. I can hardly explain what happened next. First Morrison went over the top rope to the floor. Then Chavo came flying at Dreamer who ducked and sent Chavo flying. Now all four heels are on the floor. Super Crazy goes flying over Dreamer onto all four. Then Bourne hits a ridiculously high moonsault on the group.
Through all this, Miz finds his way back into the ring and nails Dreamer with a reverse neckbreaker for the win.
Winners via pinfall: John Morrison, The Miz & Chavo Guerrero
Match #2 - Ricky Ortiz (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) vs. Gavin Spears (Niagara Falls, Ontario)
Hilariously enough, a group of people in the crowd have the Ricky Ortiz Rally Towel. Oh, the possibilities.
Spears (Ontario indy vet Sean Spears) is a new member of the New Superstars Initiative. His TitanTron simply says "Gavin Spears". In an inset promo, he claims he is the crown jewel of the NSI. Striker informs us that Spears liked the work of Rick Martel and Rick Rude and played hockey growing up in Niagara Falls.
Also new is referee Aaron Davis, who, if I heard Striker correctly, is a member of the NSI, as well.
This one doesn't last very long, as Ortiz hits The Big O (a running splash) for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Ricky Ortiz
Mark Henry is backstage lifting 80 pound weights in preparation for his ECW Championship match against Matt Hardy tonight.
Finlay and Hornswaggle are out to the ring to cut a promo. Finlay addresses his issue with Mike Knox and invites him into the ring again. Knox's music hits and he's at the top of the ramp with a mic. Knox says Finlay can't take the pressure of knowing he can walk down the ramp and take him out. Finlay disagrees, naturally. Finally, Knox obliges, but stops at the bottom of the ramp. Knox says he's going to do it when he feels like doing it. Finlay then charges at Knox and shoots a double-leg on the ramp. They brawl up and ramp and then roll of it before they are broken up by the usual group of idiots, including IRS, Dean Malenko and two referees. Quite frankly, they did not do a very good job at breaking them up.
Match #3 - ECW Championship - (c) Mark Henry (Silsbee, Texas, 392 pounds) vs. Matt Hardy (Cameron, N.C., 236 pounds)
Tony Atlas came to the ring in with a suit coat and tie on. He took off the jacket to reveal ... a sleeveless dress shirt. Wowwwww. That's a fashion statement if I've ever seen one.
Not much going on early in this one. Hardy tries for a quick Twist of Fate again, but it's not happening. He then goes to work on a leg and it has Henry limping, but Henry is able to take control and send Hardy on a ride over the top rope and to the floor.
We're back and Hardy is locked in a chinlock but gets out with a foot to the face, but immediately runs into a boot to the face. With Hardy down, Atlas rubs down Henry's knee. Hardy still can't get much going, as he runs right into a big bear hug and Henry runs him into the corner. Henry lifts Hardy up and press slams him to the floor and laughs.
Henry goes for the big splash, but Hardy rolls out of the way. Hardy struggles to his feet and starts going at Henry with arms and fists flailing about. He finally gets him off his feet but only gets two.
Hardy goes to the top and hits a flying crossbody, again for two. He gets right back up and calls for the Twist of Fate. Henry shoves him off and right into the World's Strongest Slam, but Hardy counters that into the Twist of Fate. Hardy covers, but Atlas once again pulls Hardy out of the ring. This time, there's no disqualification as the referee didn't see it.
Hardy goes to the top for a moonsault, but Henry gets his knees up. Henry gets up and lifts Hardy up and hits the World's Strongest Slam for the pin.
Winner via pinfall and STILL ECW Champion: Mark Henry
