Legend back bushwhacking
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Brian Wickens cut back on the head licking, but he's still a Bushwhacker at heart.

Known as Luke, half of the beloved Bushwhackers, he's back in the ring after six years as a talent co-ordinator for the IWA in Puerto Rico.

"I still pass through airports and people ask if I'm the guy who pumps his arms and licks heads," the 61-year-old says. "I was on a legends tour when a guy came over to the table where I was signing autographs and called me a dinosaur. I decided to put my boots back on."

Luke's fondly remembered as the guy who lasted four seconds in the 1991 Royal Rumble, knocked out by Earthquake. Luke, his arms pumping furiously as he entered the ring, didn't miss a stride as he left, arms still pumping.

While The Bushwhackers became huge fan favourites, Luke and partner Butch were vicious as The Sheepherders before they joined the WWF.

"We were hardcore before there was hardcore," says Luke. "We were doing barbwire cage matches, fire matches ... there was plenty of blood and guts."

There were memorable feuds against The Fabulous Ones, The Headshrinkers, The Fullers, The Armstrongs and The Fantastics.

"We didn't mind being Sheepherders," says Luke. "We bragged that Americans may have air-conditioned homes and air-conditioned women, but we could still take their flag and stick it down their throat. People ask how we could be one of the most vicious tag teams. The answer is simple: Easy money.

"In (the WWF), we were the characters from Down Under, where everything was different. Crocodile Dundee, that was our character."

Luke is happy to be Bushwhacking again.

"People love the Bushwhackers," he says. "I feel it again. It's great to be around the fans again. God bless North America!"
