ECW: New announcer, Delaney left laying ... again
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: In a shocking move, ECW announcer Mike Adamle was named the general manager of RAW on Monday night. Who will take over for him in the announce booth? It shouldn't be long until we find out. Should be a good one!
And we are "LIVE!" from Hershey, Pa. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-PG,V).
"The Tazz" welcomes us to ECW and introduces us to his new broadcast colleague -- Todd Grisham. Immediately, they give me hope for the future with this inspired exchange:
Todd: There's some confusion, am I supposed to call you Tazz or The Tazz?
Tazz: I get nightmares when I hear The Tazz!
Matt Hardy is out to start the show and says he has the biggest opportunity of his career when he challenges Mark Henry for the ECW Championship at SummerSlam. His speech doesn't last long as Mark Henry and Tony Atlas make their way to the ring.
After some rambling, Atlas says Henry has a demonstration for Hardy. He gets a 40-inch steel bar that Atlas claims is a lot tougher than Hardy. Naturally, Henry bends it into a 'U'.
Atlas says the difference between the bar and Hardy is that the bar bends, but Hardy will break at SummerSlam.
Hardy says the difference between things like the bar and frying pan is that they don't fight back. He fights back.
Coming up tonight, John Morrison and The Miz take on Finlay and Hornswaggle.
Ricky Ortiz is pumping himself up backstage. He looks to make it 2-0 next!
Match #1 - Chavo Guerrero (El Paso, Texas) vs. Ricky Ortiz (Paradise Valley, Ariz.)
Tazz wonders if winning one match qualifies one to call himself undefeated, as Ortiz has done.
Ortiz press slams Guerrero early in an impressive sight and delivers a back elbow and then hits a flying shoulderblock.
Guerrero works a standing guillotine choke but Ortiz picks him up and slams him into the corner. Chavo comes back but Ortiz hits him with some punches and a dropkick, but then eats one of my favorite moves, a drop toe hold.
Chavo goes for the cover with his feet on the ropes and Bam holds his feet there. The referee sees this and calls for the bell.
Winner via disqualification: Ricky Ortiz
Neely hits a full nelson slam on Ortiz and holds him down for a Frog Splash by Chavo. Neely goes outside for a chair but in comes Evan Bourne and he makes the save.
Colin Delaney is backstage with Henry and Atlas. Delaney is wondering where they were during his match with Tommy Dreamer last week. They give him the run-around but say to prove himself for losing last week, he's going to have to soften up Matt Hardy this week.
Match #2 - The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio) & John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) vs. Finlay & Hornswaggle (Belfast, Northern Ireland)
Wow, this is epic. Morrison comes to the ring with slap bracelets and slaps one on the wrist of a fan. It reads "loser". He has two on his arm that read "winner". Niiiiice.
It's not long into the match that Finlay and Hornswaggle hit the double sit-down (as it's billed by Grisham).
We're back and Finlay is taking it to Morrison, including a half-Crab, but Morrison gets to the bottom rope. Finlay continues to dominate Morrison, but the tides turn when Miz pulls Finlay off Morrison during a cover, distracting him enough for Morrison to come up from behind and send him into the post.
Miz gets the tag and goes straight to the injured left arm. Finlay gets a brief respite and hits the Celtic Cross on Morrison, but he kicks out. Hornswaggle then tags himself in and goes for a tilt-a-whirl, but Morrison reverses it into a nasty face plant for the cover.
Winners via pinfall: John Morrison & The Miz
After the match, Mike Knox comes out of nowhere and delivers a big boot to Finlay, stalks Hornswaggle and then puts Finlay down with another big boot. He then leaves.
Lena Yada chases down Mike Knox backstage. He says Finlay's gone soft and around here, soft makes you a target and he just took his shot.
Matt Hardy is warming up backstage when Braden Walker comes to say he's watching his back tonight. Hardy calls Delaney a "wildcat." Ha!
Match #3 - Matt Hardy (Cameron, N.C.) vs. Colin Delaney (Rochester, N.Y.)
Henry and Atlas join the proceedings and watch from the top of the stage.
As expected, Hardy is going to town on Delaney, but Delaney briefly turns it around with a missile dropkick, but Hardy quickly turns it back in his favor and hits the Twist of Fate and that's all she wrote.
Winner via pinfall: Matt Hardy
Henry boots it down to the ring after the match, comes into the ring and press slams Delaney onto the floor. Ouch. Henry leaves, walking right past Delaney's carcass.
Well, that was a pretty interesting show. Grisham and Tazz were great together and I am really looking forward to hearing more of their work in the future.
