Smackdown: An epic reconciliation
By ANDY MCNAMARA -- SLAM! Wrestling
If you like matches then tonight’s program is the one to watch as Smackdown has a plethora of contests. The deterioration of General Manager Vickie Guerrero and her now ex-fiance Edge continues, as The Rated R Superstar finds out there is no fury like a woman scorned. Triple H, Big Show, Matt Hardy, Natalya Neidhart, and many others are all in action here this evening so from Baton Rouge, Louisiana lets get to the report!
A recap of Edge breaking off the wedding with GM Vickie Guerrero is shown, and then The Rated R Superstar comes out to the ring to state that he stands by his decision. He reminds everyone that he has more championships then anyone on the active WWE roster. Guerrero is wheeled out by Hawkins and Ryder, and shows her power by giving Edge a match to "prepare" for his match against Triple H. It is against ... the Big Show! Edge yells that he is not afraid of the Big Show, but before his insults can continue against Vickie, the general manager cuts off his mic.
Match 1: Non-title: Matt Hardy (c) vs. Shelton Benjamin
So I guess the draft really has little impact as we still see Matt Hardy on Smackdown -- not that that is a bad thing. These two work a nice combination of high flying and technical wrestling. Hardy catches Benjamin with a kick to the mid-section when Shelton dove from the top rope to try to set up the Twist of Fate. Benjamin grabs the rope to block the finisher. Matt starts landing some quick head shots, when the referee tries to pull Hardy away from his foe. This moment allows Benjamin to pop up and connect with a leaping leaning back clothesline that smacks Matt’s head hard off the canvas. Surprisingly that’s all it took for Shelton to hook the leg and pick up the three count.
WINNER: Shelton Benjamin
In the back The Edge Heads, Hawkins and Ryder, console Vickie Guerrero and ask for a revenge match against Jesse and Festus tonight.
Match 2: Ken Kennedy vs. Domino
MVP joins the broadcast team for this match up. Domino lands a quick clothesline, however, Mr. Kennedy rebounds with a corner body splash. Kennedy scores a near fall with an impressive spinning roundhouse kick, and follows that up with a nasty running foot to the face while Domino laid in the corner. A Mic Check comes soon after and Mr. Kennedy is victorious. Following the bell, MVP gets out of his seat and the two jaw at one another. All of a sudden Umaga is in the ring and delivers a sidekick to the head, alongside of course by the mighty thumb to the throat.
WINNER: Ken Kennedy
In the locker room Chavo is with Bam Neeley consoling Edge and agrees with him for calling off the wedding.
Following the commercial break Chavo interrupts Vickie on the phone to tell her that he agrees with her and that he can not believe how Edge cancelled the wedding. That sneaky Guerrero! The GM sees right through her nephew and throws him into a match versus Triple H this evening.
Match 3: Non-title: The Miz & John Morrison (c) vs. Finlay & Hornswaggle
Morrison has one of the coolest entrances in the WWE right now. Finlay begins strong with some stiff shots on Morrison and soon after tags in his son. If you can believe it Hornswaggle nails a pair of Stone Cold Stunners, prompting good ol’ JR to pull out "Stunner! Stunner!" out of his broadcasting repertoire. Hornswaggle’s rally comes to a screeching halt courtesy of a double drop kick from Morrison and Miz. Finlay is back in and is able to hit the Celtic Cross on Morrison, but Miz makes the save. While the ref had his back turn Finlay bonked Miz on the head with the shillelagh, and then tagged in his son. Hornswaggle connects with the Tadpole Splash, which allows his father to get the 1-2-3.
WINNERS: Finlay & Hornswaggle
Match 4: Non-title: Triple H (c) vs. Chavo Guerrero w/ Bam Neeley
This must be the night of non-title shots as we head into our third one of the evening. Chavo bursts out of the gate with some right hands, an assist on the outside from Bam, and also connects with a belly to back suplex. The Game bounces back by hitting a high knee, a face buster, a clothesline, and a spine buster. Triple H continues to be Superman by knocking Neeley off the apron, and then turns around to finish off Chavo with a Pedigree. Short and sweet.
WINNER: Triple H
Match 5: Natalya Neidhart & Maryse vs. Michelle McCool & Cherry
Maryse and Michelle square off with McCool nailing a single leg drop kick for a two count. Natalya catches the surging Cherry with a slam after catching her in a cross body. Neidhart slaps on the Sharpshooter and Cherry quickly taps out. Natalya then goes to work on Michelle, by chucking her out of the ringing and laying on a snap suplex.
WINNERS: Natalya Neidhart & Maryse
Match 6: Jesse & Festus vs. Hawkins & Ryder
After the bell rings and Festus cleans house, Hawkins and Ryder strategize on the outside. They allow themselves to get counted out so that the bell sounds and Festus goes back into his comatose state. Hawkins and Ryder beat Jesse to the outside, and then double spear Festus. Jesse is able to get to the bell and ring it, which sends Festus into a fury. He takes out his two adversaries, as Hawkins and Ryder high tail it up the ramp.
WINNERS: Jesse & Festus by countout
Match 7: Vladimir Kozlov vs. Stevie Richards
It is time for Kozlov’s squash of the week, and sadly it is Stevie Richards who will receive the beat down. The Moscow Mauler is knocked off his feet briefly, but is able to come back with some heavy blows and then puts the squeeze on Richards with a body scissors. Richards actually connects with an enziguri and pins Kozlov for a one count. Vladimir recovers fast and knocks out Richards with a head butt to the back of Stevie’s neck.
WINNER: Vladimir Kozlov
La Familia sans Vickie are squabbling in the locker room when Edge settles them down and try to convince them to have his back. GM Guerrero is wheeled in and says that if anyone helps Edge tonight they will be fired, and if The Rated R Superstar backs out he will be fired as well.
Match 8: Main Event: No DQ - Edge vs. The Big Show
Edge makes his way cautiously to the ring as he looks rather hesitant to step into the squared circle. Big Show is all over Edge right off the bat and lands some heavy duty open hand slaps to the chest. The action spills to the outside where Edge is able to hit a nice looking spear before the momentum swings back and forth. The Rated R Superstar delivers an incredible looking bulldog from the security barrier. This battle finally makes its way back inside as we see Vickie Guerrero in her wheelchair now right at ringside. Edge is able to narrowly escape a chokeslam by reversing it into a DDT for a near fall. It is chair time as Edge grabs not one but two; however, he is foiled by having Show punch one of them right onto his head. The giant again goes for the chokeslam, but is foiled this time with a low blow. Edge slams him with a steel chair to the back, and sets him up for a Con-chair-to! Show grabs the former world champion out of nowhere and is able to follow through with the chokeslam. Big Show is now setting up his fallen opponent for a Con-chair-to, but Vickie Guerrero orders a stop to the match. She rushes in and covers Edge with her body to prevent harm. Big Show does nothing further and leaves without incident. Vickie helps her man up and they both tell one another that they love each other. Looks like the dynamic duo are back together!
WINNER: No Contest
