ECW: Oh Henry, an Extreme match!
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: The aftermath of the WWE Draft is felt while Mr. McMahon's seemingly annual demise is talked about. Should be a good one!
A cold open to the show and ECW General Manager Theodore Long is in the ring and says everyone will keep Mr. McMahon in their thoughts tonight and can't provide an update on his condition due to "family privacy." Long then changes gears and welcomes ECW's newest member, the United States champion Matt Hardy.
And we are "LIVE!" from Houston, Texas. Mike Adamle and "The Tazz" are our hosts. This show is presented in WWEHD (TV-14DLSV).
Match #1 - Matt Hardy (Cameron, N.C.) & CM Punk (Chicago, Ill.) vs. John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) & The Miz (Cleveland, Ohio)
Welcome back, Punk! Man, ECW sure did miss you in your absence.
The two teams go back and forth until Morrison low bridges Punk to the outside.
We're back and Miz has Punk in a chinlock before quickly tagging in Morrison. Morrison works over Punk while Miz attacks behind the referee's back. Miz comes back in and applies another chinlock, but Punk backdrops his way out of it but can't get to Hardy, as Morrison bolts across the ring after tagging in and pulls him back. But Punk eventually makes it to the corner and in comes Hardy, who comes in and hits the Side Effect on Morrison for two with Miz breaking up the cover. Punk takes Miz over the top rope. A jumping Morrison roundhouse gets two and then Hornswaggle distracts Miz and Morrison, allowing Hardy to hit the Twist of Fate for the uno, dos, adios.
Winners via pinfall: Matt Hardy and CM Punk
Match #2 - Extreme Rules - Shelton Benjamin (Orangeburg, S.C.) vs. Kofi Kingston (Jamaica)
YES! Extreme Rules! It's about time! Another exclamation point!
The match quickly heads to the outside as Kofi hits a springboard crossbody on Shelton. Benjamin, though, gets the upper hand when he drills Kingston with a microphone and then sends him face first into steel steps.
Benjamin continues the assault inside the ring and sets up a garbage can between the top and middle turnbuckles but Kingston starts to battle back. Benjamin puts him back down with three consecutive shots with a garbage can. He follows it up with a suplex onto said can.
Benjamin keeps the heat on Kingston, hitting the big splash once but went to the well one too many times as Kingston drills him with a garbage can lid on his way in. Three more shots from the lid send Shelton to the mat. With Shelton hanging on the ropes, Kofi slides outside and delivers another shot. He then picks up a chair while Shelton begging off, but a kick to the midsection puts an end to that.
Shelton goes for a powerbomb, but Kofi reverses into a hurricarana then sends Shelton crashing into the garbage can that was set up in the corner. He follows it up with Trouble in Paradise for the win.
Winner via pinfall: Kofi Kingston
Coming up tonight, two guys who aren't even ECW property battle, as Kane
takes on Mark Henry.
Match #3 - Mike Knox (Phoenix, Ariz.) vs. Evan Bourne (St. Louis, MO)
Knox gets all the offense in early, working Bourne over big time, but a chop block a missle dropkick and a hurricarana seemingly turn things around for Bourne, but a quick backbreaker into the Knox Out end it for Bourne. Are you kidding me?
Winner via pinfall: Mike Knox
Wow. Just wow.
Match #4 - Kane (Hell, Fire & Brimstone) vs. Mark Henry (Silsbee, Texas)
Unfortunately, my recording bit it as Henry entered the ring, so I'm going to have to rely on WWE.com for what I'm sure was an epic encounter.
Winner via pinfall: Mark Henry
Yeah, in the four minutes I missed, I'm sure a five-star thriller happened. Of note on WWE.com, as well, is that Henry, with the win, has shoehorned his way into the ECW Championship match at Night of Champions. Hooray.
