Smackdown: La Familia dismantles The Animal
By ANDY MCNAMARA -- SLAM! Wrestling

With the WWE Draft coming Monday this may be the last time fans will get to see some of their favourite Superstars on Smackdown. Eight matches flood Smackdown’s agenda tonight from San Jose, Calif. MVP finds out that running your mouth has consequences as the general manager throws him into a battle versus Kane. La Familia are also up to their usual tricks as they supply an unpleasant surprise for Batista during the main event. Enough chit chat, let’s get to the action!

The show begins with the VIP Lounge where MVP is discussing the upcoming WWE Draft on Monday night. He goes on to say how he wants to go with whatever franchise utilizes him best and that he could outshine any member of La Familia. GM Guerrero and crew interrupt with Vickie and MVP going back and forth about his place on Smackdown and contract renegotiation. Vickie states that MVP can show how good he is tonight against ECW’s Kane.

Match 1: Non-U.S. title - Matt Hardy (c) vs. Bam Neeley w/ Chavo Guerrero

Hardy is able to actually outmuscle the larger Neeley with some right hands and a surprise enziguri. Bam’s power begins to take over by catching Hardy in a cross body and dropping him neck first over the top rope. Neeley wears down Matt with a modified rear naked choke, but Hardy turns the tide with a clothesline and a second rope bulldog. Hardy went to soar up top when Chavo grabbed his foot. The ref ejects Guerrero and when action resumes Matt connects with a Twist of Fate out of nowhere.

WINNER: Matt Hardy

Edge, Chavo, and Bam are backstage. Edge tells Guerrero he will take care of Matt Hardy for him next week, but that he needs Chavo to face Batista tonight. Guerrero freaks out, but Edge says to trust him.

Match 2: Michelle McCool vs. Layla

This is another match to impress Vickie Guerrero to see who will face Natalya Neidhart at Night of Champions for the new Diva title. Both ladies are more brawling than wrestling and are actually looking pretty good in the ring. Natalya is shown at the top of the ramp scouting her potential competitors. McCool hooks in her heel hook submission for the tap out win. Neidhart and Michelle stare each other down.

WINNER: Michelle McCool

Vickie and Edge bring in referee Charles Robinson who ejected Chavo from the match earlier. The GM claims that Robinson is against La Familia. Vickie says that Charles will get to prove that he is un-bias -- in the ring as a wrestler tonight!

Match 3: Jamie Noble vs. Vladimir Kozlov

Noble tries a couple of takedowns, but is shoved off and tossed around with ease. Noble is actually able to knock Kozlov off his feet with a missile from the top and locks in a guillotine choke deep. Just when the Russian looks to be reeling he powers to his feet and rams him into the corner. Noble goes for an elbow drop off the second turnbuckle only to have the standing Kozlov head butt him right to the ribs, and score the pinfall.

WINNER: Vladimir Kozlov

Match 4: MVP vs. Kane

MVP starts trash talking and Kane shuts him up with a stiff uppercut. The former U.S. title holder sinks in a chin lock and lays a beat down on the ECW champ with a running head kick. Mick Foley is a terrific colour analyst as he adds so much with his detailed description of Kane’s hands during MVP’s submission manoeuvre. The Big Red Machine clotheslines MVP over the top rope following his leaping clothesline. MVP refuses to climb back into the ring and is counted out. Mark Henry lumbers down the ramp and sucker clotheslines Kane when he was punching MVP. Henry drags Kane back into the ring and hits the powerslam.

WINNER: Kane via countout

Match 5: Charles Robinson vs. The Great Khali

The Smackdown referee is really being punished here by Vickie Guerrero. This should be over painfully fast. Charles goes to run up the ramp, but Hawkins and Ryder stop him and throw him back into the ring. Robinson is knocked out with a clothesline, again by a head butt, and one more time with a head chop. Poor Charles is finally put out of his misery when his fellow official rings the bell once Khali’s vice grip is put on. Robinson is then loaded onto a stretcher with a neck brace

WINNER: The Great Khali

Match 6: Jesse & Festus vs. Deuce & Domino

Festus goes nuts and knocks both men to the outside. Deuce and Domino snap on one another and they tear away on each other. Deuce eventually throws Domino back in where Festus proceeds to make short of him with his F5 like move. Following the bell Deuce adds insult to injury by delivering a running kick to his now former partner’s face.

WINNERS: Jesse & Festus

Match 7: Finlay w/ Hornswaggle vs. The Miz w/ John Morrison

Good gravy they have Finlay coming out with a green bowler and an inflatable shillelagh ... oh how I miss the ruthless heel side of the Irishman. Morrison joins the broadcast team to add some insight. Finlay grounds Miz early with some vicious clotheslines, until Miz bounces back with a sleeper hold. Once the Irishman regains control Morrison drags Hornswaggle out from under the ring, however, the leprechaun is ready this week as he smacks John in the knee with a shillelagh! Miz becomes distracted, which allows Finlay to connect with the Celtic Cross for a 1-2-3.

WINNER: Finlay

Match 8: Main Event - Batista vs. Chavo Guerrero w/ Bam Neeley

Edge told Chavo earlier in the night not to worry about this match and he lives up to his word by becoming the special guest referee! Batista is initially distracted by Edge, but is able to have his way with Chavo and lands some clubbing blows. Following a stalling front suplex Edge delivers a slow count and then trips the Animal. The Rated R referee pulls Guerrero down on top of Batista and tries for a super fast three count. Batista becomes fed up with Bam Neeley’s outside interference and when he goes to confront him Edge gives him the fastest 10 count in Smackdown history.

WINNER: Chavo Guerrero via countout

The Animal is furious and gives Chavo a spinebuster. He turns to go after Edge, however, the rest of La Familia rush in to dismantle Batista. Chavo connects with a frog splash, and Edge ups that with a spear to end the program.
