Raw: No. 1 contender determined
By DALE PLUMMER -- SLAM! Wrestling
Honestly, I’m not tuning in tonight for the results of One Night Stand; I want to know how I can get a cut of the million dollars Vince is giving away. (Well, I’d be watching no matter what or I would have a mad Greg Oliver on my hands.)
WWE Champion Triple H kicks off the festivities from Bakersfield, Calif. The Game walks to the ring as we see highlights from his match against Randy Orton the night before. Orton broke his collarbone after being thrown from the ring. Hunter says the Age of Orton is broken, adding it is a lot easier to walk out with bumps and bruises when you have the WWE Title. Trips doesn’t know who is next and doesn’t care.
John Cena sticks his nose into the title picture, walking to the ring to confront the champ. Cena says everyone knows the future is now, and the two see eye to eye, except when it comes to the WWE Championship. Hunter has conquered all, except for Cena, and Cena says with the upcoming draft they may never get this chance again. Hunter says you want some, come get some.
Jeff Hardy interrupts the party. Hardy states he isn’t the only person to win last night. Hunter doesn’t care who he beats, so Hardy and Cena should work it out. Hardy says Vince will love Hardy versus John Cena for the first time, when the Boss steps in via the TitanTron. Vince says what everyone wants is the details on the million dollar give away. McMahon likes the idea of Jeff Hardy versus John Cena with the winner taking on Triple H at Night of Champions.
Match #1 – Mr. Kennedy vs. Paul Burchill
Kennedy addresses the Paul Burchill attack before the match. He tells Burchill that he will follow in Regal’s footsteps by crying after Kennedy is done with him. Burchill and sister walk out on stage, saying that he has to help Katie get ready for her first match, so Umaga will be filling in for him.
Match #1a – Mr. Kennedy vs. Umaga
Umaga knocks Kennedy to the floor, but misses a charge in the corner. Umaga shoves Kennedy to the floor, and then hits a Samoan drop, but Umaga stays down selling his injuries from the night before. Kennedy focuses on the taped mid section of the Samoan Bulldozer, but Umaga knocks him from the ring. Umaga misses and splash from the apron and crashes into the announce table. Kennedy gets back in the ring. Umaga is down, and tries to get back in the ring, but cannot beat the count.
Winner via count out: Mr. Kennedy
After the bell, Burchill attacks Kennedy from behind with a chop block and a neckbreaker.
Money, money, yeah, yeah. It isn’t Cryme Tyme, but instead Vince’s people are bringing a box of cold hard cash to the stage.
Vince walks out on stage to fill us in on the details pertaining to the Million Dollar Mania. Vince welcomes a million dollars in cash to the stage. Vince loads the money into his Plexiglas podium. Vince mentions there is armed security around arena. The way it sounds Vince will be giving away money in increments that will add up to one million. Vince says after registering on their website and Vince will call the winners. Vince says he is doing this for the ratings. (He didn’t come out and say it, but read between the lines.)
Match #2 – Carlito and Santino Marella vs. Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes (non-title match)
Rhodes announces that tonight there will be a special time keeper, Roddy Piper. Carlito gets in a quick shot in on a distracted Rhodes and Santino tags in. Rhodes hits a cross body, but Santino gets the tag. Carlito hits a sit down power bomb, and tags out. Santino misses a move off the top, and Rhodes tags in Holly. Piper grabs Santino, allowing Holly to set up an Alabama Slam. While the ref admonishes Piper, Carlito kicks Holly, allowing Santino to get the pin with a sunset flip.
Winner via pinfall: Carlito and Santino
Santino is interviewed by The Grish backstage. Santino says not even Piper can save Cousin Sal on Friday. (So the feud started on RAW, but will end on Smackdown?)
Back in the locker room, Holly wants to know why he wasn’t informed about Piper. Rhodes says it was a surprise. Holly says he wants to know what is going on since he is the veteran. Rhodes asks what it matters since they are still champs. Holly tells him with that attitude they won’t be much longer. Holly leaves and the younger DiBiase walks in. Junior says he is three weeks away from naming his partner and becoming one half of the new tag team champions.
Jim Ross and The King interview Chris Jericho, asking for his reaction on Shawn Michaels being wheeled out of the arena last night. Jericho says he has always respected Shawn, so he is dedicating his match to HBK tonight.
Match #3 – JBL vs. Chris Jericho – Intercontinental Title Match
JBL starts Jericho in a headlock, and then takes him down with a shoulder block. Jericho counters another charge with a hip toss, but JBL fights back with a right hand and a neck breaker. JBL locks in a full nelson. Jericho elbows his way out, but JBL gains the advantage placing Jericho on the top turnbuckle. Jericho counters with a DDT, and then hits a clothesline and shoulder block. JBL blocks an attempt for the Walls of Jericho. Y2J runs JBL in the corner, and then hits a back elbow. Jericho is caught on a flying cross body, and JBL hits a fall away slam. Jericho ducks the clothesline from hell, and kicks JBL from the ring. Jericho connects with another drop kick on the apron, but misses a baseball slide. JBL connects with a big boot outside the ring, and JBL grabs a chair, shoving the ref out of the way. The ref calls for the bell.
Winner via DQ: Jericho
After the bell, Jericho avoids damage by driving the chair into JBL’s throat. Y2J then stands over Bradshaw with the chair, but cannot bring himself to hit him. Jericho walks off.
Match #4 – Beth Phoenix and Katie Lea Burchill vs. Melina and Mickie James
Katie Lea picks gets the pin after Mickie James is attacked from behind by Beth.
Winner via pinfall: Beth Phoenix and Katie Lea
Paul comes out to congratulate his sister and Kennedy jumps him from behind. Kennedy wants Burchill back in the ring, now.
Cryme Tyme walks out to check out the money. They see the security detail, and leave empty handed.
Match #5 – Lance Cade vs. Trevor Murdoch
Murdoch tries to serenade his former partner, but Cade wants none of it. Murdoch is knocked to the outside, and Cade runs him into the ring post. Murdoch hits a back elbow and a big boot, but cannot get the pin. Murdoch kicks Cade in head, and climbs the turnbuckle. Cade catches Murdoch in the gut and then hits a sit down power bomb to get the win.
Winner via pinfall: Lance Cade
Mickie James is icing her neck down, when John Cena stops in to check in on her. Cena apologizes for all the gossip flying around the locker room. Cena also wanted to return something that she left last night, her panties. Mickie is a little embarrassed and runs off.
Match #6 – John Cena vs. Jeff Hardy – Number One contenders match
Cena and Hardy shake hands before locking up. Cena gets Hardy to one knee, when an idiot fan jumps in the ring. Security takes care of the moron, but Cena and Hardy take a quick break. Hardy slaps on a side headlock. Cena breaks free, shooting Jeff off the ropes, and hits a hip toss. Cena then drops an elbow, and slaps on reverse chin lock. Hardy breaks free and hits a hip toss, followed by a snap suplex. Cena uses a drop toe hold, but is then knocked from the ring, and Hardy kicks him through the ropes. Jeff then launches himself over the top rope and lands on Cena. We go to commercial.
After the break, Hardy goes for a pin, but Cena kicks out at two. Hardy is whipped into the corner, and Cena nails a suplex. Cena covers, but only gets two. Cena misses a corner charge, and Hardy hits a flying clothesline. Cena recovers to hit a blockbuster, but once again only score a two count. Hardy connects with a face first suplex, and goes to the top rope. Jeff misses the swanton bomb, and both men are down. Cena ducks a clothesline and connects with the shoulder. Cena slams hardy to the mat, and hits the five knuckle shuffle. Cena stalks hardy, but Jeff fights out of the F-U, connecting with a forearm. Hardy hits the Whisper in the Wind, but Cena is able to kick out at two. Cena blocks the Twist of Fate, sets up the F-U, but Hardy wriggles out. Jeff hits a drop kick, and climbs the turnbuckle. Hardy hits a flying cross body, but Cena rolls though it, picking up Hardy. Cena connects with the F-U, and gets the pin.
Winner via pinfall: John Cena
Triple H walks out and in confronted by Cena. All Hunter does is hold the belt up in the air.
