Raw: Candidates and contenders to the crown in three-hour special
By DALE PLUMMER -- SLAM! Wrestling

Thereís a pay-per-view on Sunday, but tonight RAW is going an extra hour to bring us The King of The Ring Tournament, which in itself used to be a pay-per-view. And in a major coup, WWE has locked up the three major candidates in the U.S. Presidential election to tape appearances for tonightís show from Greenville, South Carolina.

Lillian Garcia kicks off the show by introducing the first two entrants in the KOTR.

Match #1 - Chris Jericho vs. MVP - King of the Ring Quarterfinal match

MVP starts off with a clubbing blow to the back and takes Jericho to the mat. Jericho responds by hanging MVP on the ropes, and then connects with a drop kick through the ropes. MVP ties up Y2J in the middle of the ring, but Jericho fights out of the hold. Jericho connects with a forearm, but then MVP counters a charge with an overhead belly to belly suplex. Porter then gets a near fall with a northern lights suplex. A big boot sends Jericho to the mat, and then gets Jericho up on his shoulders before dropping him to the mat. Y2J plays possum, and connects with a clothesline. MVP jabs Jericho in the throat, and follows with a facebuster. Y2J responds with a bulldog, but cannot find the target on a lionsault. MVP sets up his finisher, but Jericho counters into the Walls. MVP taps out in the middle of the ring.

Winner via submission: Chris Jericho

After the match, Jericho takes a seat on the throne.

Match #2 - CM Punk vs. Matt Hardy - King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match

Both men lock up, and Hardy locks in an armbar. Punk blocks a side effect, and hits a swinging neck breaker. Punk then slaps on a chin lock. Hardy punches his way out, but Punk takes him down with a side head lock. Punk knees Hardy in the corner, and sets him up on the turnbuckle. Hardy fights Punk off, and connects with a flying axe handle. Hardy connects with a clothesline in the corner. Punk blocks a bulldog, and hits a knee to the face. Punk hits his own bulldog, and climbs the turnbuckle. Hardy counters the high spot with the side effect, but Punk kicks out. Punk blocks a Twist of Fate, and hardy slips out of the GTS. Punk counters a sunset flip by sitting on Hardyís shoulders, and Punk gets the pin.

Winner via pinfall: CM Punk

Punk takes his turn to sit on the throne.

WWE has put Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in the ring, a virtual ring, in Smackdown vs. RAW 2008. Although, King says they will meet in person tonight.

JBL cuts a promo for Backlash. He says he will survive; he will be news; and he will be champion.

Match #3 - The Great Khali vs. Finlay w/ Hornswoggle - King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match

(And things were going so well up to this point.)

Finlay dances around the giant, kicking at his legs. Finlay then runs into a clothesline, but is able to roll away from a leg drop. Finlay leaps into a kick. Hornswoggle tries to defend Finlay but is chased from the ring. Khali hits an overhand chop, and then smashes Finlayís legs into the ring post from the floor. Khali continues to work over Finlay despite the count from the ref. Khali is disqualified.

Winner via DQ: Finlay

After the bell, Big Show walks to ringside. Khali backs off, as Show slips into the ring.

After the break, Finlay is helped to the back.

Match #4 - William Regal vs. Hornswoggle - King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match

(And this tournament as just gone from bad to worse. Or I think the fix is in.)

Regal chases down Hornswoggle and brings him to the ring. Regal locks in the Regal stretch, and Hornswoggle taps.

Winner via submission: William Regal

After the bell, Finlay confronts Regal, and Regal kicks him in the injured knee.

Shawn Michaels comes out to address Batista. HBK says this is the last thing he thought would happen after beating Ric Flair. Shawn asks Batista to come to the ring. HBK asks Batista if the problem is that he wanted to face Ric Flair at Mania. Batista says this is personal now. Batista says he is sick of talking, but the bottom line is at Backlash he is going to finish this. HBK appreciates the honesty, and has a confession. Michaels admits to being everything Batista says he is. He is the guy that will stop at nothing to win, and Shawn extends his hand. Batista shakes, but doesnít let go right away. Both men tease making a move and Batista is the first to leave.

Hillary Clinton is the first candidate to address the WWE audience. (I wonít get into personal politics, but I will say that I never EVER thought I would see the day the future president of the U.S. made an appearance on RAW.)

Match #5 - Hardcore Holly w/ Cody Rhodes vs. Carlito w/ Santino

Carlito starts with a hip toss, but Holly responds with a slam and a leg drop. Holly kicks away at Carlito in the corner, and whips him to the other corner. Holly runs into a boot, and then Carlito hits a knee to the gut. Carlito slaps on a chin lock. Holly powers out of the hold, but is shot off the ropes into a dropkick. Carlito slams Holly to the mat, but canít get the pin. Carlito smashes Holly into the turnbuckle, but misses a corner splash. Holly responds with rights, and a clothesline. Carlito runs into a dropkick. Holly goes for the Alabama Slam, but Carlito counters with the backstabber. Carlito covers for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Carlito

Santino gets on the mic after bell, saying they will take the belts. Rhodes grabs the mic and asks him if he ever shuts up. Cody smacks Santino in the head with the mic, and Holly and Rhodes clear the ring.

Triple H has his say about the match at Backlash.

Match #6 - Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk - King of the Ring Semi-final Match

(Just like the NBAís Western Conference Final will determine the champion, I have a feeling this semi-final match will crown the King. Although this is WWE, so Regal will end up winning the whole thing.)

Jericho takes Punk down with a shoulder block. Punk lands a series of kicks to the leg, and then shoulders Jericho in the corner. Jericho tries to hang Punk on the ropes, but Punk bounces off and hits the floor hard. Punk leaps to the top rope, but Jericho kicks him off balance. Punk and Jericho trade shots. Punk nails a clothesline. Jericho responds with a huricarana into a pin, but Punk counters into a pin, and Jericho counters that. Punk counters the Walls into a roll-up, but Jericho kicks out. Punk power slams Y2J, getting another near fall. Jericho drops out of the GTS, and hits a bulldog. Punk tries to block the lionsault, but Jericho lands on his feet and locks in the Walls of Jericho. Punk gets to the ropes to break the hold. Jericho charges Punk, who tries to drop him to the floor. Jericho lands on the apron, and climbs the turnbuckle. Punk hits him with an enziguri, and then nails the GTS. Punk covers for the win.

Winner via pinfall: CM Punk

Barack Obama gets his time to speak, and he channels a little of The Rock to end his statement.

Match #7 - William Regal vs. Finlay - King of the Ring Semi-final match

Finlay comes to the ring with a heavily taped left knee. Regal goes for the knee, but Finlay counters with monkey flip. Regal rolls out, and then drives Finlay into the ring steps. Regal focuses on the knee and leg of Finlay, beating him down in the corner. Finlay fights back, tossing Regal into the ringpost. Finlay hits a knee lift and goes for a backslide. Regal kicks out, and is able to lock in the Regal stretch. The ref calls for the bell.

Winner via submission: William Regal

Senator John McCain has his say and does his best Ric Flair, and Stone Cold.

John Cena cuts his promo for Backlash.

Match #8 - "Hillary Clinton" w/ "Bill" vs. "Barack Obama"

(Iím not even going to dignify this "match" with a recap.)

That is until Umaga runs in to stop this farce. Umaga spikes Obama, and Bill thinks heís a Hillary supporter. Umaga freaks, and Bill clears out of the ring. Umaga picks Hillary up, and lays her out with a Samoan drop.

All the face Divas hit the ring. They are going to honor Mickie James for beating Beth Phoenix and winning the WWE Womenís Title. Maria offers her congratulations. Mickie says she proved everyone wrong, but is interrupted by Beth Phoenix and the rest of the heel Divas. Phoenix says it isnít a matter of if she will win in back, but when. Michelle McCool steps in and slaps Phoenix and pandemonium ensues. The faces clear the ring.

(I smell a 12 Diva tag match down the road.)

Match #9 - William Regal vs. CM Punk - King of the Ring Final

WHAT YOU THINK
WWE holds a King of the Ring tournament Monday night. Are you...
Thrilled? - 12%
Intrigued? - 36%
Ambivalent? - 5%
Finding it hard to care? - 36%
Huh? - 11%
Regal comes out swinging, but Punk recovers, driving a knee into Regalís face. Regal hits a suplex, and makes a quick cover. Punk kicks out. Regal and Punk trade kick, then Regal locks in a submission. Punk breaks free and connects with a kick to the head. Punk picks up Regal, but Regal grabs the ropes to break free. Regal nails Punk in the head, and is able to lock in the Regal stretch. Punk taps.

Winner via submission: William Regal

(See. What did I say earlier?)

After the Match, Regal takes his throne on the RAW stage.

Match #9 - Randy Orton, JBL, Chavo Guerrero, and Edge vs. John Cena, Triple H, Kane, and The Undertaker

Orton says his piece about Backlash before anyone else comes to the ring. JBL and Orton jaw at each other as we go to break.

Edge attacks Undertaker from behind, but Taker recovers with a flying clothesline. He then takes Edge Old School, and clears out the heel corner. And we go to break.

We return to find Edge in the ring with Triple H. Hunter counters a spear with a face buster, and Cena gets the hot tag. Chavo low bridges Cena as he tries to shoot off the ropes and JBL tosses Cena back in the ring. Orton tees off on Cena, and JBL gets the tag. A hard lariat sends Cena to the mat. Edge tags in, and hits a big boot. Orton rides Cena on the mat with a sleeper and leg scissors. Cena breaks the hold and both take each other down with clotheslines. Kane and Chavo get tags, and Kane cleans house. Kane follows a sidewalk slam by flying off the top turnbuckle. Kane covers and JBL and Edge break it. The faces take out the heels, as Chavo climbs the turnbuckle. Kane catches Chavo in mid air and choke slams him. Edge sneaks in (and is the legal man?) and spears Kane and covers for the win.

Winner via pinfall: Randy Orton, JBL, Chavo Guerrero, and Edge

After the bell, Cena F-Uís Edge. Triple H sets up a Pedigree for Cena, only to get clotheslined by JBL. Orton hits the RKO on Cena, and then faces off with JBL. Undertaker comes up from behind and choke slams Orton and JBL. Undertaker is the only man left standing in the ring to end the show.
